This leaves a really bad taste in my mouth... why is the Pope now telling God which people should go to heaven and which shouldn't? Isn't that God's decision????

The Pope is the reason that I am not Catholic.

I think you misunderstand the issue. The whole issue surrounding Limbo is the lack of revelation from God and the Church doing some very deep soul searching.

Jesus said, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved." (Mark 16:15-16)

For centuries, people have wondered about children who died before they were baptized. The Bible does not explicitly state that they will go to heaven.

Limbo was suggested as the place where unbaptized babies went when they died. This idea was never official Church doctrine and has been rejected.

The Church now says that it is not sure what happens to unbaptized babies when they die but she entrusts them to the mercy of God.

With love in Christ.

There are very few instances- this one possibly being the most historic- when the Vatican has actually come close to "correcting" an error of its ways and claims.

Of course, it doesn't end up being an apology because the Church and its loyal band of spin merchants simply say "it was never official doctrine anyway".

Yes, nor was torture, but that did not stop the Inquisitors from being granted blank cheque absolution, nor has the Catholic Church ever properly apologised and chronicled the evil of this period.

You should feel sick when you see such action- for its highlights the absurdity of people ever believing the pope represents God, let along Jesus. They stand for nothing but raw power and suppression of wisdom.

Actually... he can't do that. A pope a long time ago said that it is not the duty of the pope to receive revelation. He merely interprets revelation that is already in the Bible. So who revealed this new thing about unbaptized children since the Catholic Church doesn't believe in modern day revelation?

without having read the article, I can say that the pope has always been charged with the task of interpreting the bible to modern day life, as have many many other religoius leaders. Pope is not God, and never claimed to be. That is how I can be catholic and still not have the same stances on everything as the pope. Do you have the link where i can read the article?

Yeah...since Vatican 2. Its still God's decision though...but honestly, God is not going to bad an unbaptised baby from heaven in my opinion. Try mouthwash for the taste in your mouth. Is it that you want unbaptized babies to do to hell?

The Church has been changing the rules for centuries!! You're only now catching on?

Every now and then they "modernize" their doctrine to ensure people don't move away from the church. It's all politics. They've changes things so many times now it's a completely different religion from what it once was. Honestly, do the research and you'll see what I mean.

How can anyone blindly follow a religion that changes it's story like this? Especially when they do it JUST TO KEEP THE MONEY COMING IN??

You are SO far out of the loop. He did that the first week he was pope. Where have you been, or did the protestant churches just send the news flash out today?

Its just a bad PR scheme to get people to return to church... All those famililes who's children died unbaptized, all those single women who have left the church because they were told their aborted fetuses were in limbo....now they all have a reason to go back to the church and continue its financial support...

Uh, 2cute09 - arent we all allegedly born with original sin? thats makes babies born in sin. YOURE WRONG.

I would be leery of any sect of Christianity (or those who claim to be Christians) whose doctrine continually changes. The bible is the bible and nothing of God's word has changed since He basically dictated it to the men who wrote it. The Catholic Church bible isn't even totally the original bible. There are books and creeds that were not canonized at the time the bible was interpreted and placed into English print. So, I'm not saying that Catholics are not Christians but I am saying that much of their doctrine is not biblical.
