I have a 3 year old that uses a pacifier. It is partly my fault that I have let it go on this long, but she is getting older and I do not want these things around anymore. She does not use them during the day at school, only at bedtime and sometimes while watching TV. Any suggestions??

Partly your fault? Sorry darlin, but it is ALL your fault. At least you can see that you have let it go on way too long and want to do something about it now. My solution is simple - throw away EVERY pacifier in your house. When your kid wants one, you just tell him/her that they all went away. He/She may cry, throw a tantrum or whatever, but it won't last long - just stand your ground and don't give in to the fits. Its hard, but you're doing what is best for your child.

Yeah 3 years old is a little too long to be having a pacifier :) The way to do it is to be a little devious or tricky. (not to be mean) when she doesn't have the pacifier in her mouth, take it away and hide it and then when she asks for it, redirect her to a toy or give her a popsicle to suck on. if she doesn't use them at school, and only at bedtime and sometimes while watching tv then you're half way there. You have to be creative. If you don't have a popsicle handy, then give her a cookie. Soon she'll forget about her pacifier.
Use your imagination when it comes to things like this.

tell her that pacifiers are for babies and that she is no longer a baby anymore. And take point out to her that so and so doesn't use a pacifier. And also when she is ready she'll stop using it. Also give her a blankie or a stuffed animal in replace of it during bedtime. Her pacifier is a safety thing for her.

ive found that they best way to get rid them is to give them away ie father christmas, easter bunny or the pacifier tree where the pacifier is left for the fairies to take and a reward is left in its place in the morning/ later in the day, explaining thats what the big boys and girls do. Do not keep any spare around the house as you will only be temptated when it gets tough! it might be hard be stick to it but it will be worth it in the end! good luck!

I have 4 boys and never used a pacifier after the age of 6 months. My suggestion is to replace it with some thing else she could use for security. That's all it is. That's what she needs it for, it makes her feel comfortable. So give her some thing that she could cuddle with instead

Go cold turkey. It might take a while, but it will work if you stick with it. Children who have pacifiers for too long can have speech development issues, not to mention problems with their teeth.

This seems to be the question of the day...it's been asked and answered 3 times.

THROW IT AWAY, the first 2 nights will be rough but after that it will get better, pacifiers are only intended for the first month of a childs life, get her a dental check up also

As hard as it is you should simply take them away. She may cry for it for a while but eventually she will give up.

You could have her collect them all in a basket and send them to the passy (or whatever she calls them) Queen. (box them up and let her mail them to grandma or someone to toss.) -remember she thinks she's mailing to a Queen..lol Make sure that whoever you mail them to sends her a big girl present in return. She will think it's neat that she gets a big girl present much less in the mail from a Queen. By the time the mail returns to her it will have been several days...she's likely to be so excited about the mail that she has totally forgotten. Send them to me...I'll help ya out. LOL-no, I'm not a freak, just a mom willing to help! Good Luck

My daughter's diarrhoea replaced right into a blessing in cover. We defined to her she fell ill because of the germs chanced on on her pacifier. She took her pacifier and threw it interior the garbage bin

Yeah, take the things and hide them.. get rid of them! Tell your beautiful daughter that she is a big girl now and doesn't need anything like that anymore.. give her some positive rewards for good behavior and progress! I do believe that once those things are out of sight, they will be out of mind as well! I watched something like this story on the Nanny recently!
It worked out really well... good luck to you!
