When Japan occupied Korea.... they developed their self defense art off of Japanese Karate. Just the truth... TKD guys get all butt hurt over it because their art is only about 60 years old..... not thousands like they try to claim. If you wanted to claim distance..... technically we all evolved from the first punch thrown by a cave man.... see how stupid that is?

"korean karate"-oh i do hate that expression-usually employed by the ignoramuses amongst us. the roots of taekwondo (correct pronunciation-tai kwan do) can be traced back 5000 years when the korean peninsula was unsettled by tribal warfare. the korean peninsula was mainly comprised of three kingdoms- koguryo paekje and silla. they were constantly fighting for control of korea and as each kingdom had its own kings and tribal cheifs they would develop their own military training. it was through this training that taekwondo as we know it today evolved. (itf being the more traditional side and wtf-formulated in 1955 being the sports side). the main differences between tkd and karate are in tkd more emphasis is placed on the kicks and karate is not a true martial art where tkd is (that is to say the art was -or is adopted by a country's armed force as part of its training curriculum).

you do realize that the japanese are korean descendants right?
taekwondo evolved from another korean martial art called taekyun, and both have been around for centuries
thus it is safe to say shotokan copied taekwondo rather than the other way around
feel free to look it up or ask any true martial artist

no not true. yes TKD is 60 years old but history of korean martial art is over 2000 years old. Before TKD, Korea had many different martial art forms and school. Of many school, there were about I think 12 major school (do jang). All but one (hap ki do) of these school came together and formed TKD and made their headquarter Kook Ki Won. In Korea there are still very few independent school that did not join TKD one being hap ki do as mention before and Tak kyun (very close to TKD but more traditional). If you do some research you can see that Korean martial art do go over 2000 years and there are physical proof to this.
To Hood_12. If you know about Korean history at all, then you would realize that while Japan had occupied over 31 years, they have tried to erase all past Korean history and try to brain wash them to think that all things in Korea were evolved from Japan. There are some individual or groups that are out there trying to teach the same things. Unfortuntally they got to you. And if I wanted to argue more, then there are people out there that say that emperor
of Japan is actually decendent of Korea and that Japanese samurai and bu shi do is also from Bak Jae kingdome (one of three kingdome before Korea). And that all things in Japan is actually from Korea and that they have just evolved over time and Japan have made it like its from Japan.

This is partially true. Koreans who went to Japan as forced laborers learned Japanese styles & that greatly influenced Korean MA after WW II.

I warn you that I'm a tad unhelpful, I just remember hearing something about...the different art forms of fighting, and how different...Asian countries perhaps, tried to settle on just one, or tried to create a superior form of fighting. So one country could have taken the form, and, in their opinion, made it better.
