When I go to the shops and buy something they take my money with few questions asked.

When the product doesn't work I take it back and ask for a refund. They then ask for my name and my address. I sometimes give it, but often don't. When I don't there is usually an argument, with the manager having to be called. I normally get my refund without having to give my personal details.

Does anyone else dispise this attitude that shops have of demanding this information. Often I get paraniod that I won't get the refund if I don't give the information.

Yes, so many people nick then try to return, the shops are doing it in self defense. Also it keeps employees from writing up false claims and putting the cash in their pockets.
Because of the situation, I don't mind giving my name and other details.

I have worked in retail for many years and I'll tell you why this is the case. Shoplifting.

Say someone broke into our backroom and stole 6 pairs of Nike shocks, a box of 25 Underarmor shirts for guys, and a wakeboard. The next day you return 6 pairs of Nike shocks. Then a week later you return 10 underarmor shirts. And a few days later, 15 underarmor shirts...well it may be a coincidence but probably we now have the name and address of our thief!!

It's the same reason pawn shops ask for that info. SO that in a week when the cops come looking for this particular ring, we can provide them with the contact of the person who brought it in.

Yes I understand how it bothers you but you need to think of it from the shop's perspective as well. Return fraud is one of the biggest problems. It used to be just money lost from shoplifting but now shoplifters don't want the merchandise. They'd rather have the money. People shoplift and then return it for the money without a receipt. Many stores have started putting limits on how many items you can return within a 3 mo period.

I do get a bit irritated but usually it doesn't bother me because the people at the store here are almost always very nice and understanding. The only time you have to give that information is if you are returning and not ex-changing. The reason many stores ask for that information is because it helps prevent fraudulent refunds. And don't get mad at the cashier, it is not their fault that they have to request that information. If you have major problems with this, try asking for a corporate number and ask them to explain to why they need all that information, it may put your mind at ease.

This annoys me, too. I just give a false name & address.
