I don't know, but it's still pretty gross that we eat "lard". That's the crap that most of us try and remove from our bodies and then we eat it. Yummy!

Dictionary: "Lard is the white solid or semisolid rendered fat of a hog."

There are various types of shortening...read the labels.
Vegetable shortening can have all kinds of interesting ingredients and preservatives. Cottonseed oil, peanut oil, etc.

Dictionary:"Shortening is a fat, such as butter or lard, used to make cake or pastry light or flaky."

Now just so you'll know, when you season cast-iron cookware/grill grating, vegetable shortening will leave the cookware sticky. I tried seasoning my cookware 3 different times --Followed instruction but thought I was doing it wrong.

Mom said you have to use REAL lard (hog fat) to season the cookware. That's how her mom taught her, there wasn't any "store bought" shortening in her home (just lard) while she was growing up.

For the same reason suet isn't called animal shortening. It describes a fat with a particular consistency. For instance, suet is also from animals, but that can describe beef fat as well as deer fat. Suet doesn't work in baking nearly as well as lard or shortening.

The term 'shortening' can apply to any kind of fat used for cooking, including dairy, but for clarity, it only refers to hydrogenated vegetable fat.

It's too long? I am not in any way shape or form actively in denial about humans being animals. I just don't like wasting my breath on a longer term that means the exact same thing.

It's more PC to call it lard instead of dead animal fat.
