Limit the junk. But I'm not a fan of forbidding. All that does is sensationalize the stuff for a kid. A kid who isn't allowed to have candy is much more likely to gorge on it when you're not there to stop them.

Keep them active. And be active with them. When they're little, they don't care what the activity is, as long as you do it with them. So go for walks, ride bikes, kick a soccer ball, anything to keep them moving.

And encourage them to eat more healthy items - fruit and veggies especially. Set a clear limit on things like candy and soda. More than never, but a hard and fast rule... once a day, once a week, something measurable and something consistent (rather than... "You've had enough" after you realize they've had 5 in the last 2 hours).

Teach them moderation from an early age. And yes, practice what you preach.

We don't keep junk food in the house except on special occasions, and I cook healthy meals for my son and husband. We don't get fast food either, and no soda or juice.

A great way to keep the whole family from getting obese is to play as a family. Playing tag with the kids in the park, going for bike rides or walks, and playing baseball in the yard or park are fun ways for everyone to get physical activity.

Also, my son loves to play outside now, but when he gets interested in the computer and TV more, he will have to spend a minute playing outside for every minute on the tv/computer.

Feed them healthy meals and snacks. Dont buy candy, cakes, and cookies etc. It doesnt hurt to buy cookies but only give them 3 or 4 at a time 3 or 4 times a week. Get them use to eatting fruits for snacks. Bananas are the worlds greatest fruit there good for you blood, keeping you from getting sick, vitiams etc. Dont let them sit in front of the tv or a game all day. Make them go outside and play... its exercise that they need and time you can use to clean up etc.

By teaching them to eat healthy and never tell them don't eat pizza because you will be fat, let them eat even junk food but moderate not always once in a while it is fine and normal because they are kids, the same for candies they have to eat ... I they are at home cook for them healthy avoid fats, cokes and greasy food.. teach them to eat vegetables, fruits, juices and lots of water too..also you can encourage them to play sports and do outdoor activities and by this you will be helping them and will prevent obesity !!!

Make sure they eat a healthy, balance diet and are active. Teach them how to make a healthy food choice and why it is important.

Kids need to get outside and run, jump, ride bikes and play ball instead of exercising their thumbs on their Gameboys. Encourage your kids to play outdoors, enroll them in team sports, go for family walks after dinner. Limit their time in front of the TV and computer and limit their exposure to junk food and fast food.

Children learn by example. If you adopt a healthy lifestyle then your kids will do the same. Eating healthy and plenty of exercise is the best for children and adults.

If you are fit and healthy...eating healthy and excercising
Get rid of the video and TV except for rainy days (this is the hardest thing) and involve your kids with your excercising and healthy eating.
Sign them up for a sport every season...let them pick which one.
This way they make friends who are also active and instead of having Jimmy call to see if Johnny can come over to play video, you will have Jack calling to see if Johnny can ride bikes to the basketball court to play some basketball before going for a swim.
It sort of steam rolls that way. (plus it is really fun to go watch your kids be healthy and active at their sports!!)

Have fun with it!

Your child is mirroring you. If you lead a healthy lifestyle and exercise daily they will to. If you eat hamburgers for every meal and sit around doing nothign, they will do the same.

You can't have a child that is active and has a healthy eating habbit if your sitting on the sofa and eating all day.

teach them everything in moderation. help them by leading by example of eating healthy foods. dont make them finish their plates if they arent hungry, doing so could make them ignore their true hunger signals-thus leading to overeating and always feeling like they have to finish their plate, also healthy exercise, limiting tv and video games to only a couple hours a day at night time can make it so they are more likely to be active. take them to the park to play basketball or go for a walk. maybe encourage them to join a sport at school or at the ymca. remind them that they only have one body and they should take care of it so they can live a healthy long life.
most importantly, make being healthy a positive and fun learning experience for your kids.

good luck!
