Join a mom's group at a local church, join an online mom's chat forum in your area. I found a lot in my single parent's forum and now our children can play together and we get to do a little bit of traveling for the ones that live further away!

Most of my friends, I met at church. My kids and their kids see each other once a week at least. We all know each other, trade babysitting with each other, hang out together. Now that my kids are in school, it has been more difficult for me to make friends with the other moms, but I know alot of the other moms up there that meet and make friends. There are also playgroups. Our local library has a storybook time each week for preschoolers and toddlers. There are many moms there. Our local Michael's Craft store has weekly craft classes for kids.
I would just find opportunities like that. Anything in the area that promotes activities for kids is a good way to meet other moms. Of course, there is always, the good old fashioned way - The Park! Take you kids to the park and chat with the other moms there.

Mothers of Pre-Schoolers (MOPS) is a great way to meet other moms. You can find out more information at www.mops.org

You can also meet other moms at places like the local playground. Once your child gets older and involved in school and other activities you will meet other parents just by virtue of having children in the same activities.

Start talking to the other moms at the park. People usually go to the park that's closest to their house so you'll know that they live nearby and you can strike up a casual conversation with the moms while everyone's playing and if you hit it off you can suggest meeting at the park again soon--and later move into at home playdates and even friendships that don't include the kids.

Have a chat with your health visitor. She will be able to give you a list of local mother and toddler groups. I was the first of my friends that had children but soon got to chat to other mums at these groups. We had lots in common due to our children and the little ones made new friends too! My oldest is now 10 and we are still friends with our mother and toddler group now! Its hard at first to go up and talk to strangers but it will be worth it. I'm sure you will be fine. Good luck with your new friendships!

Take a birthing class or some other parent-to-be class. It is a great way to meet other moms and get educated at the same time. Check your local hospital for classes.
