Ok so I'm getting my first tattoo in a month and it's going to be on my foot. Now I know everyone keeps saying that you should get your first one somewhere else but there isn't any other place that I want to get one right now.
My questions though, I've heard that it hurts less on your left foot then it does on your right, is this true? My other question is I'm getting in on the side of my foot verses on top of it, will this help relieve some of the pain?

Any advise anyone can give would be fantastic!

It turns out, if you are right handed, it usually hurts more on the left side, and visa versa. Thats how it was with my arms. On the foot, I would imagine the same effect. You put more pressure (oddly enough) on your right foot if you are right handed. So that foot can handle more pain than the other. Just remember, tattoos only hurt for a few minutes when they first start. Eventually, the area goes numb and you barely feel anything at all. Carpe Diem & good luck to you!

My feeling is that you should always make decisions on tattoo placement based on where you want the tattoo to be, not what's going to hurt more while you get it (which will, after all, be a temporary process). Put it on whichever foot you'd like it on. You'll manage the sensation of getting tattoed just fine, wherever you get it done.

In terms of whereabouts on your foot to place it, you should bear in mind that tattoos on feet do tend to fade more than tattoos on other areas of the body, due to issues with the initial healing, and with friction on and movement of the skin. Basically, because the skin on your feet gets rubbed and moved around a lot more, during the course of the day than, say, the skin on your back, it can lead to the tattoo also suffering some of that wear and tear over time. I'm inclined to suspect that this problem would be more likely to happen on the side of your foot than on the top and so I'd suggest the top of your foot would be the better option - but do discuss this with your artist. Pain-wise I doubt it would make much difference anyway, to be honest.

Hope this helps!

why would one foot hurt more or less than the other? i have both of my feet tattooed and i would say that they both hurt the same amount, which was excruciating. it was definitely the worst tattoo pain i have ever had to deal with. tho i have a friend who had her foot tattooed last month and she said it didn't really hurt any more than any other tattoo she had. everybody is different.
do be aware that you can't wear shoes or socks for two weeks after you get your tattoo done and you need to be able to keep your foot elevated for the first couple of days to keep it from swelling too much.

my one and only tattoo is on top of my right foot. It hurt!!!!!!!!!!! that is the only place I wanted it though, and since you have it forever it was worth it to me to get it there. I don't believe right or left makes a difference.Just research the person who does it and make sure it is a nice clean environment.good luck

i have a tat on my left ankle and really it all depends on where the tattoo artist starts at he started right on my ankle bone. after the first 5 mins it hurts. but after that it goes numb.
If you get a tattoo artist that digs into your skin it is going to hurt for about 3 days. Also it depends on the artist.

I would imagine that it hurts the same on both. I guess you could always apply a topical numbing cream on your foot before you get the work done.

No idea about tattoos, but when I get my eyebrows waxed, the left one hurts waaayyy more than the right. Don't know if that's helpful.

if the artist is left handed it will hurt less. if he uses his right hand it will hurt more. you might want to call him and ask him.

I just called a tattoo shop to ask them, and they laughed and told me to smack you.
