My friend is a single parent and works until 6pm on the other side of the city from where he lives so he doesn't get home until about 7. His kids are 4 (boy) and 7 (girl) and he wants to get them involved in a sport or an activity for after school. The daycare won't provide transportation. What can you recommend??

not much you can do except play a sport when you get home at night and find something with other children on the weekends!

Anything you can do with private lessons..because then you can schedule the lessons at your convenience...like for a musical instrument or such.

Call around to the local dance, gymnastics, karate or other martial arts centers. Most likely they'll have a session later in the evening that will fit your friend's scedule.

Most group sports are probably out of the question because the practices and game times will fluctuate and probably will happen in those hours before 7pm.

That's a hard one.

I think it would be hard to find something good for both the 7 and 4 year old - such different ages and abilities.

Maybe he should consider taking the kids out of day care and hiring an at home nanny.

Or...is there a Boys & Girls club in town? If yes, check out their after school programs.

It sounds like they have very little time together on week days. It would be hard to take time away from their hour or two to take them to someone else for their activity. Perhaps they could do something active together on weekdays, then get involved in swimming or the like on weekends. Maybe he can find a daycare that has more going on.

maybe a fellow school parent with children of similar ages can take the kids and he can pick them up

also a lot of employers are working out flex time with their employees. maybe he could request to be off early one day a week or go in 1 hr early to get off 1 hr early

he could survey fellow school parents and maybe together they can start an acitivity group amongst themselves that works around their work schedules

maybe he and the kids mother can work out some kind of system

Try to get involved with activites on the weekends. Maybe gymnastics for the girl, martial arts for the boy or swim lessons for both.

You could ask another parent involved in that activity if they would take their child for the day of that activity.

There might be a non profit organization in your area that has mentors for young kids. That might be one avenue. I did that with my son and we received a mentor FAMILY (How cool is THAT?) They spend time with him each week doing things like going to games, eating dinner, going to the park, etc.
