If you believe that you will get the help you need at a guidance center then by all means you should attend. In fact they would be better equipped to evaluate whether you need to speak to a Psychiatrist. or a Counselor. The guidance center appears to offer a lot of options. Including Psychiatric and Psychological Evaluations. So i think you should go there first.

Looking at the list of the Guidance place, I'd say they probably make referrals to the right doctors for you. I would not be satisfied with that, myself. I would pick my own psychiatrist.
Have you spoken to your regular doctor about these feelings of anxiety? Often, your regular doctor can help you with medications to calm you. If you are wanting to learn WHY you have these emotions, the psychiatrist will probably be the best bet. Learning why is the first step in learning to control your anxieties. Still, a light med is usually a very helpful thing.

I think that before you see a psychiatrist, you should see another mental health professional to help you even determine if you need medication. It depends on the severity of your problem. There are plenty of empirically supported treatments for anxiety disorders that may work for you.

If, after seeing a clinician, preferably a clinical psychologist with training in cognitive-behavioral techniques, you still are having signifcant difficulties, then you can ask for referrals to an appropriate psychiatrist.

After 2 minutes a psychiatrist put me on medication. All I said was, I'm depressed. And then he did the whole 'chemical imbalance' routine and sent me out the door with a 'script. If you want a proper diagnoses, see a Phd in Clinical Psychology, these people can diagnose, but do not prescribe medications. After awhile, if you feel the need for meds, see the psychiatrist tell 'em your diagnoses and 2 minutes later walk out with a 'script.

It's really up to you. If you have health insurance that covers psych care (most do) ask your MD for a referral to a psychiatrist. Most insurance companies have a list of psychiatrists that they will cover (like MDs). If you don't have insurance, go with whichever one would cost less.

start with the psychiatrist, he can best decide if you need medication, and which one you should have. THEN go to the counselling center to learn coping skills for dealing with the anxiety disorder.
