Your doctor is talking rubbish. They can kill you in overdose. Also you can die from abruptly stopping xanax and other sedative hypnotics. The most dangerous drugs to withdraw from (stop using abruptly) are alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepines such as xanax as they can provoke seizures which can be life threatening. The higher the dose and longer they are taken the more severe the withdrawal effects. All sleep aids and tranquillisers available on prescription have the potention for dependency and serious withdrawal effects. If you want to learn and understand the drugs you are taking I would recommend that you read this resource http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/
Xanax is the most potent benzodiazepine that you can get as well. 1 mg of xanax is equivalent to 20 mg of diazepam http://www.bcnc.org.uk/equivalence.html
Print this out for your doctor http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=2300914&dopt=Abstract
Xanax is known as the generic/chemical name alprazolam
I hope this helps ya out.

When I ran a quick search on your question, I saw that two of the things Xanax does (or can do) is slow your heartbeat and cause difficulty breathing. So I would say that it can in fact kill you, especially if you mix it with alcohol.

No.
Taking an overdose of any tranquilizer (and most other drugs, as well) can kill you.
