When I lean back with my arms out to stretch in the morning or after I've been in my car all day, my breastbone pops so loud, other people can hear it, and I can feel it. Sometimes it hurts. Is this a problem?

near as i can tell, the popping sound comes from the friction between your sternum and the cartilage that connects it to your ribs. it's kind of like cracking your knuckles. disconcerting, yes, but nothing to worry about.

My breastbone pops, too, usually on the same side. It happens when I lean back, stretching my shoulders. At first, I'll notice a pinching and some pressure that will get worse until it finally pops. Then the pain is completely gone. Sometimes just the tiniest pop can make all the difference. I've read that it can be a symptom of chostochondritis, an inflammation of the cartilage. But I think it's more like cracking your back or knuckles or any other adjustment. If anyone has a better explanation, please let me know.
