The words Ismail Ax never appear together in the Koran, only the name of the prophet Ismail. We know who Ismail is but what does the Ax stand for?? It was important enough for the nut to put on his arm so it is important enough to try to understand. The word Ax(my refrence is the Electronic Text Center Of Virginia’s version of the Koran) isn’t even in the entire Koran. This leads me to believe that it is not a Islamist statement but a literary one. the name Ismail as the news is spelling it does not appear in the Bible at all. So i think we need to get off the Biblical and Islamist trail and onto another one. I read that maybe it was a refrence to a book written by James Fenimore Cooper called the prairie but i can’t find where in that book the refrence is. It makes sense because he was an English major and would have had to read the book. I think we need to realize that he spelled the name a certian way and that he added the word Ax so it means something to him and we might never know what the real meaning is. I think we try to blame Muslims for lots of things like this when we all know very well that is is the work of psychopaths but the kid still had to pull the trigger. It was his fault and his fault alone and that is the power of free will that God has given us.

Nothing it doesn't exist in history.

Ishmael means son of Abraham in Arabic. Cho sent his package to NBC under the name of A Ishmael.

"Ismail Ax" on Cho's arm, was meaningless.... it meant and means nothing in English, Arabic, or Korean.

Who knows what it meant to him... he was mad.

Some theories are Cho expressed copycat images in his photos to a movie he had seen, "Old Boy", but it has no reference to Ismail Ax ... it as I said earlier doesn't mean anything [maybe he spelt it (his intentions) wrong].

Fox news said that it was from one of three possibilities, the one that made the most sense was something about shades of ismail ax, a story written by some guy.

The most credible theory I've heard is that it refers to a character in a novel by James Fennimore Cooper. His name was Ishmail and he used an axe as a weapon of vengeance.

I have read several meanings so far ,one suggests that it refers to the incident where Abram(Abraham) took an axe to sacrifice his Son Ismail.
