We have very limited parking in the little office complex where I work. We are located directly adjacent to a courthouse, and police officers often park in our spots, forcing employees to pay for parking elsewhere. The parking area is clearly marked as private parking, not for the courthourse, violators to be towed at the car owner's expense. We've often had other cars towed, but don't know what to do about the police cars. They're not above the law, are they?

I am not sure if the police cabn remove a vehicle from private property without complaint in Mississipppi. If the police said they can, I tend to believe them. Especially since you spole to a high ranking offcier. However, I am not sure waht difference it makes, because it is obvioulsy you fault it happened in the first place. Let's look at each point. 1) You were parked at your friends house. 2) your car was vandalized 3) the police investigated, and found that it was highly probable the your "friend' had done the damage 4) the police were unable to arrest your friend (I would imagine that there are some information in this part that you either didn't share with us, or you don't understand. Perhaps the police did not have sufficient evidence to arrest) 5) Now we get to the good part: You drove the car to a 'rental property three blocks away" Why didn't you just go home? 6) the police issue you tickets for driving under suspension and no insurance Why were you driving in the first place? Don't try to tell us that it was a surprise that your license was suspended? And how about the insurance? 7) the police tow your car away It may be the fact that it is a "uninsured vehicle" that gives the polcie the authority to tow it You see, no matter what happened, it could have all been prevented in the beiginiing by you NOT driving while your license was suspended.

You can write down all the tag numbers and contact the police chief or the sheriff and try to resolve it this way, you can stress how much these law officers are costing law-abidng, working, and taxpaying citizens.
If this fails - Have them towed. Call the State Highway Patrol and they woll tow them and impound them at no cost to you. The department that the cars belong to will be responsible for fines, storae, and towing.
They are not above the law, they are actually held to a higher standard in a lot of cases.

I would

a) Take pictures of the cars parked in the marked spaces.
b) Write a letter to the police commissioner and mayor asking them to stop this practice. Attach the pictures with date and time stamps to show evidence of the practice.
c) If the practice continues, call the local TV station and have the news reporters over for a visit with their cameras.

As for having the police cars towed, I would suggest you call your lawyer to check to see if it is legal in your community to tow public property.

I do not think that any towing company would have the balls to tow a police car, however...I would contact the department and let them know of your complaints.

I would begin by expressing the problem to the police department. If they continue to park there, it would be a bit tricky to have them towed, as I'm sure they can claim to be able to park anywhere if it's for police business. I would kindly ask them not to park there anymore and then contact the City about it if it continues.

The easiest way to solve your problem is to contact your local precinct commander to explain your problem and request an officer to issue parking summons to the offending vehicles.

A friend of mine had a similar problem and filed a complaint for trespassing. The squad stopped being parked on his property.

C.S. has the best suggestion.

Pictures and contact the PD. That will do, as no Chief wants the black eye that will result in continued parking.

No, they're not above the law BUT they think they are. I had a problem once I called the mayors office and it was fixed right away. If I were you that's what I'd be doing.
