Fresh enough to make sushi and ceviche, without ending up in the hospital! I'm in the Hollywood area.

I handle cases of seafood poisoning out here. I have spoken to people who got sick from seafood purchased at highly reputable places like Whole Foods and Redondo Beach Pier. In general, eating any raw seafood is going to be a risk, especially if you prepare it yourself (sometimes, it really is better to leave it to professionals).

But I sympathize. I love sushi, too (ceviche, not so much). I would have to say that Ranch 99 in San Gabriel has very fresh seafood (believe it or not! And they'rei nexpensive with amazing sushi-grade fish selection). I know that's a bit away from Hollywood, but I'm speaking from experience. if you must stay closer to home, then Whole Foods on the Westside might be a better bet. Or you can try Bristol Farms. There's one Manhattan Beach.

The important things to remember are: when bringing home fresh fish (like ahi tuna), keep it SUPER COLD. Fish can go bad quickly, and that can mean scombroid fish poisoning. And I would advise against oysters -- they are the cause of most of the illnesses I investigate.

Lastly, if you do get sick, please see the doctor right away. If you have diarrhea, have the doctor take a stool specimen. Then, you'll probably get a phone call from me personally, and I will interview you about the seafood, where and when you got it, and what symptoms you had. So if I leave a message on your machine, please call me back ASAP.
