And ergo, he's in Hell???

FYI: Suicide (Latin sui caedere, to kill oneself) is the willful act of taking one's own life. A suicide can also refer to the individual who has killed themself. Suicide may be caused by psychological factors such as the difficulty of coping with depression or other mental disorders. It may also stem from social and cultural pressures.

There's a difference between knowing you are going to die and taking your own life. Jesus said he "laid his life down" so that others would find eternal life. If a person pushed a pedestrian out of the way of a car to save that person's life while giving up their own, I wouldn't consider that suicide. Jesus gave up his temporary life on earth for the benefit of eternal life in heaven for us. Besides, Jesus rose from the dead (many witnesses) and is now in Heaven.

Suicide victims going to Hell is largely a Catholic belief. Not all Christians share that. Most suicide victims are egocentric, Jesus died for a reason. He knew He would die. He wasn't killing himself, He was killed, He just knew it would happen. Big difference.

Well if you consider turning yourself in knowing you are going to get the deathpenalty for a crime you did not commit/have no moral objections against, Then yes he did.

If you believe in an ultimate showing of faith and love he let himself be killed, only to wake up three days later, no he didn't.

It is just a matter of faith.

It was none of those reasons you listed. Sure he knew he would die, and he did lay down his life. But it was not from social pressures or stress or depression. It was a "throw yourself in front of a bullet" kind of death. He was saving us. That makes him a hero, not suicidal.

Interesting perspective, but not quite what He was up to. He did not nail Himself to the cross, though there is evidence that He willed Himself to die: "No one takes my life from me; I lay it down that I might take it up again."

This was a willing sacrifice, not a suicide. He did not nail Himself to the cross, that was done for Him. That said, a case could be made for goading the saducees and pharisees in their pride to make sure it happened. Remember the public embarrasments and lessons point out their shortcomings? How about the 10 woes He pronounced shortly before His betrayal? This was done in front of large crowds, and all 10 pronouncements begin with, "Woe to you, scribes and pharisees, HYPOCRITES!" [emphasis added]

Seems to me that since He knew all things, it's no stretch to suppose that He knew just how to poke their pride to accomplish their will. And it was not sinful for Him to do it! They could have repented, but He knew they wouldn't. This knowlege allowed Him to fulfill the prophecy of Simeon:

Luk 2:34,35 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this [child] is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

Certainly He was in full control of His mind when He made arrangements for His mother to be cared for by John, and when He cried with a loud voice, "It is finished!" it is recorded that He YIELDED up the ghost. In short, He willed Himself to die. This should not be taken, though, as a mental disorder since He had decided to do this, and had even argued with God about it in the Garden of Gethsemane. Since God would not be swayed, He chose to give you this gift - a sacrifice!

Won't you take Him up on His offer?

Tom

No. He didn't physically take His own life. He didn't nail HIMSELF to the Cross! He OFFERED Himself for us, so that we might have everlasting life. Suicide, as you said, (in not so many words) is the MURDER of ONESELF. Jesus was murdered in the eyes of many people, but He didn't do it to Himself.

The point is he knew he could not be killed. It was a demonstration - a little extreme or we wouldn't still be discussing him - of the power we all have, but rarely apply to anything useful.

Read the Bible, he came to die for us. There is a difference between saving and commiting suicide.

Did the engineering professor who blocked Cho from entering his classroom commit suicide? Of course not. It wasn't suicide -- he voluntarily laid down his life so others could live.

Jesus did the same for us.

p.s. -- suicides don't go to Hell unless they were unsaved.
