i recently started using a blow dryer and my hair and scalp have become dry and flaky. I have thick, curly hair so i have to use gel and hairspray to keep it from getting puffy, frizzy and going all over the place, so i was just wondering if using something like VO5 hot oil would add some moisture. also, i use conditioner after i wash my hair and i noticed that some of my hair falls out, is this normal?

the hot oil treatments will help for the dryness of the hair and scalp. for the itch and flakes use tea tree oil shampoo and conditioners. you can find them in any beauty supply store. you can also try drying your hair on a low heat setting. your hair shouldn't fall out if its moisturized properly so keep it moisturized

1) It is normal to loose a few hairs every day.

2) Use a super absorbent hair towel (ex. Aquis or The Body Shop) & keep the blow dryer away from your scalp. Use a cooler setting at the roots too. http://www.aquis.com/

3) Try to find a low alcohol gel. Consider using a silicone anti-frizz serum instead. Kiehl's Silk Groom is another good product for curly hair & will leave it soft. http://www.kiehls.com/_us/_en/catalog/product.aspx?CatCode=AXE_Hair&TopCat=F2_Stylist_Series&prdcode=262

4) Joico K-Pak conditioner is excellent. It can be used every day or as a deep conditioning mask if left on for 5-10 minutes. Joico also makes a spray on leave in conditioner. http://joico.com/index.php

5) If you need to moisturize your scalp, rub a drop of jojoba oil between your hands & massage your scalp. I use Desert Essence brand. It's available @ Trader Joes', Whole Foods, etc. Jojoba oil is non-comedogenic & washes out easily so there is no build up. http://desertessence.com/

6) Consider finding hair styles that allow you to let your hair dry naturally. ex) Braid loosely & twist it into a bun, secure w/ hair pins. Use a little pomade or serum to help smooth it out.

7) Consult a hair dresser about a different hair cut that works w/ your hair texture.

Hello, A fat eating yeast-like fungus called malassezia, formally know as pityrosporum, is the most common cause of dandruff. Although this fungus lives naturally on everyone's scalp, it sometimes grows out of control causing dandruff. This fungus feeds on the oils secreted by hair follicles and causes irritation that leads to increased cell turnover. This is what causes the flakes known as dandruff. It is not clear what causes the overgrowth of these organisms but hormonal fluctuations, stress, illness neurological disorders, a suppressed immune system, bad hygiene and a sensitive scalp can contribute. We have purchased every bottle on the drugstore shelf for this probblem and now we are headed to the dermatoligist. To help us bear the discomfort of waiting to get in to a dermatoligist the DR. has prescribed a steroid shampoo called Clobex. See the doctor and don't continue to experiment like we did. Best Wishes, Carol K.

The best thing for dry itchy flakey scalp is Paul Mitchell tea tree shampoo and conditioner. It tingles a little but your flakes will be gone after only a few shampoos. It also has a cooling effect that is great in the summer time.

You probably wash your hair too much ,Wash your hair every other day and use Head and Shoulders Drandruff Shampoo/Conditioner. Also use Herbal Essences None of your Frizziness to helpwith your thick curly hair. I have thick and curly hair too... and i also use Paul Mitchell smoothing and straightening serum. it works really good. As for hair falling out, thats completely normal. Hair is weak when its wet so just be careful when your in the shower... take a look in your hair brush. Theres tons of hair.
