In 1950, 90% of people believed in a religion and 10% atheists. In 1975 it was 80% religious and 20% atheists. Today, the latest polls show 65% are religious and 35% are atheists. I feel confident and reassured that in the year 2050 people who believe in religion will be the minority! More and more people are waking up each day to realize that god does NOT exist and worship is a waste of time. When will you wake up and leave your god behind???

i'm not sure we will be able to educate people enough by 2050, but i would think in 100 - 200 years, people will have the knowledge to leave religion behind.

religion was invented to explain the unexplainable - that's why there are so many contradictions between science and the bible today - when it was written, it was accurate because nobody knew any better. now we know.

I do not think your figures are accurate. At last count, over 90% of people said they believed in some sort of God. I think it's too soon for that. I'd love it if society really did move to a point where religion was no longer necessary to control the masses. Like in Japan, virtually everybody is atheist (Buddhist/Shinto/Atheist) and they have a very polite and civilized society. We're a Christian nation though, and there will be people fighting tooth and nail for the survival of their religion. They may start finding new ways to secure more people. I don't know, 2050 would be very generous. I think that sometime in the next 120 years or so, most theistic religions will have been proven incompatible with what we know about our universe, and those theistic religions will start to wither and die.
It'll take a long time, though. You have no idea how persistent these people are. They will change the doctrine itself to make it more suitable for the times, if they have to. That usually doesn't work, though, since fundamentalist Christian churches are rising in numbers, and those that change for society are declining in numbers.
So, no, I don't think so. I don't think that's too bad either. I don't mind Christians. They're really not bad people. Some are. A great many are just too ignorant for words. But they're still fundamentally good people. With big hearts, and a desire to help people.

You have to look at those polls more carefully. There are fewer people who believe in ORGANIZED religion, but are still spiritual. In fact, recent polls indicate fully 95% of the American population believes in a God or omnipotent beings (i.e. multiple gods or supernatural beings). This was a poll that was discussed on the news only last month and similar figures were found in confirming polls. Your poll probably includes agnostics; Agnostics are not atheists

I do not believe in a God, as per the Christian tradition, but I do believe in spirits and intercession. I also respect most others' beliefs including their belief that there is no God, spirits or anything. Interestingly, though, I have found that most atheists I have met personally, tend to be rather depressed, somewhat arrogant people. Makes me wonder if that personality gravitates towards that belief, I just notice it more, or if lack of belief encourages that personality. My sample size isn't large enough to really make that determination.

That is funny, I just saw a poll that said 85% of people attend church regularly and most of those were of a Christian faith. Don't you know that no poll is ever scientific and the results depend upon the people that were asked questions. If they asked 100 people downtown some huge city where drugs are running wild, then no, you probably arn't going to get people to say they are religious. If you look around, the major churches are stroger than ever, ( Catholic and Mormon ) and new religions are popping up all over. No it will not die in the year 2050 or in any year, religion is stronger than ever before.

Polls are not all that accurate. I suspect you are looking for
confirmation of your own beliefs, Why should you care if
others have a religous faith?

Fully 92 percent of Americans say they believe in God, 85 percent in heaven and 82 percent in miracles, according to the latest FOX News poll. Though belief in God has remained at about the same level, belief in the devil has increased slightly over the last few years — from 63 percent in 1997 to 71 percent today.

Your survey is flat out wrong. Every survey I've seen still shows 90-10, in the U.S. If you go to other countries, like India, Japan, Middle Eastern countries, I bet you'd find well more than 90% are theists.

Religious traditions, many of which have lasted for thousands of years, are not going to disappear in the matter of 80.

If you have a link to "the latest" polls (the 65-35), I'd love to see it.

Most of the people I've come across who lost their Christian belief turned to Buddhism or Hinduism. So, I wouldn't say 'religion' will die out by then. Maybe Christianity specifically. But, if the Mayans predicted right, we have until 12/21/12. I don't think Christianity will die out in that short of a time limit.

well, you make an interesting point. If the polls keep going in that direction then religious believers will be the minority. It will just go to show that the world is coming closer to an end. Because as stated in the book of Revelation, there will be a period of time when unbelievers surely are the minority and the world is the majority. So thanks for the info, it confirms that yet again the Bible is truthful and correct.

Maybe for you, but never in the world. Religion is one of the reasons we are alive, if you take people's beliefs away from them, then they wouldn't be human.
Even if in the 2050(if we ever make it till then) the majority will be atheists, religion will never die. Even if we are a small minority, we will never succumb to the god of money the people believe in today. I will never accept that.

Not likely considering the vast variety of religions out there. But I believe by 2050 atheists won't be the least trusted members of society anymore.
