Some have described it as the "dark night of the soul." True enlightenment - whatever the way or path of approach - has been reached when the outside is like the inside and vice versa because external reality synchronizes with you. Paraphrasing a Gospel of Thomas message - keep seeking until you find what is troubling you, then you will rule over all. Reality is presenting experiences that you have faith in - both good and bad - and to change it you have to change yourself. The complexity of our thought system - all its emotional ambiguities, survival strategies and conflicts make this extremely difficult and challenging. Most people are simply not up to it and don't have the incentive to persevere. New contemplative methodologies like NLP for instance are very effective and akin to religious admonishments like "knock and the door will be opened," "fast from the world and pray without ceasing."
But, practically, if you are referring to a specific issue you are struggling with, usually when we are forced by circumstance to "give up on it" (dark night analogy applies to this experience as well) which causes us to shift into a different state of consciousness, the answer can finally present itself.

In two dictionaries I checked, ignoring the variations on the root, enlargement comes before enlightenment.
I guess I'll have to take those spam emails more seriously if I'm going to achieve the next level of spirituality.
