If there really is heaven, and we indeed survive our death, why is it that we are all sad at the bedside of the dying? Why is it that we morn their loss, and why is it that we will not allow euthanasia to someone who is suffering so badly, so that they can go on and live pain free in glory? Is it that in the final analysis, we are none of us really sure? Why are be bemoaning death,if we never really die?

I think part of the reason is that religious people sometimes don't have the faith they claim to: that they doubt that they will see this person again.

However, I'm willing to believe that many religious people who mourn the death of loved ones actually do have enormous faith that they'll see them again. But it's natural to feel terribly sad when someone you love goes away so far that, even if you know you'll see them again, you don't know when and that, moreover, you won't be able to contact them in the meantime.

On the other hand, I know of quite few atheists who fear death less than those who do believe in an afterlife. I'm not sure why this is: perhaps those who do believe in an afterlife fear the unknown (after all, no one claims to know exactly what it's really like in heaven), while atheists know exactly what awaits them: nothing.

I'm an atheist. I believe (and I think the evidence points here) that my consciousness will not survive my brain. But you can't experience the absence of experience, so you never know that you're dead: you can only ever know life.

Yes there is a Heaven, but not everyone will be going there. This depends on wether we have received Jesus as our Lord and Savior. He is the door and no one gets to the Father unless they go through Him. God loved you so much that He sent His only begotten Son to die in your place. He paid for your sins with His own blood. When we turn from our sins, and are baptized in the name of Jesus for the payment of our sins, then God gives us the Holy Ghost, God Himself, as a gift. The Holy Ghost gives us the desire and the power to become the Children of God and receive eternal life in Heaven. Death is a very sobering time. We should take inventory of our lives and do those things that are required of us to gain eternal life. The choice is yours. What do you choose?

*Sigh.* We morn death because we are human, which means we have emotions. Same reason we cry at weddings. BUT! HAve you ever seen a Christian die? There is always a peace and a glow about them! They see what we cannot see. They can't wait to leave, while we morn their passing. I wouldn't want to do anything to keep them here if they wanted to go. BUT! I do not think we should let people take their own lives with a doctor's help! Life is still life, and we should hang onto it no matter what!

Separation of any kind is a mournful thing. Even when you know they are better off. When a fellow believer dies, I am sorry that I can no longer sit and fellowship with him, yet I also rejoice that he is fellowshipping with the Lord! How awesome is that? I know, upon the authority of scripture, that I will see these brothers and sisters again. I praise God for that hope of eternal life that He has given through Christ Jesus.

April, I think it's because heaven is a depressing place. Would you really want to spend enternity with a bunch of goodie-two-shoes? If that's the case, I would prolong my life too if I were going there, or I would cry for my dead Uncle if he's obviously going there. All my favorite rock groups are bound for hell, or so I've heard. So what music will there be in heaven? Celine Dion? You call that heaven? If Aerosmith is truely going to hell, sign me up.

We are humans that have relationships with others. We morn because even though that person may be going to heaven, we will still miss them.

we are seperated from them for a time and can not know for sure if we will be with them in heaven. even when we believe we will go to heaven we can not be sure for others.

Of course there is a heaven.

Death is the end of a relationship as we have been experiencing it.

It is a part of life to grieve.

There is no heaven or hell. And people are sad when someone dies because THEY lost them and will miss the person that died.

We mourn the passing of a loved one but we do not lose all hope as the pagans do.
