Murder is a sin and God annihilated practically the entire human race on one occassion, and ordered the mass execution of babies on several others, etc. According to the "Bible," of course. This "God" is merely a reflection of the pettiness and savagery of its authors.

But since primoa chimed in on this one, I'm required to swat him down. "God's jealously is righteous, ours is selfish." Typical dodge. God all but acknowledges other gods when He thunders "Thou shalt have no gods before me" - of course He claims to be the only "true" god (which is what primoa means by the "righteousness" of His jealousy, I assume), but that's exactly the same claim made by all the other tribal war gods of savages, and there's not much to choose between them. Anyway, you can always say "Well He's God and the rules are different" - which is undoubtedly true! - but it remains nonetheless that petty human emotions don't cease to be petty when we humans attribute them to God.

There are 50 verses that use jealous or jealousy NIV. The Old Testament is written first in Hebrew and later in Greek. The New Testament is in Greek.

When we use jealousy, the Hebrew word means "become dark red". Both Hebrew and Greek word "refer to an exclusive single-mindedness of emotion which may be morally blameworthy or praiseworthy depending on whether the object of jealousy is the self or some cause beyond the self."

"In the former case the result is envy, or hatred of others, which for the New Testament is the antithesis of love and hence the enemy of true Christian fellowship."

"The bible however also represents the other possibility, of a divine jealousy, a consuming single minded pursuit of a good end."

"In this sense the jealousy of God is of the essence of his moral character, a major cause for worship and confidence on the part of his people and a ground for fear on the of his enemies."

jealousy is a complex emotion. It is not always a sin. Most of the time when people are jealous, they are sinning becuase their jealousy is motivated by greed or selfishness. If your motivations for jealousy were pure then the jealousy its self would not be a sin. This is the case with God. Covetousness, which brings with it the idea of wanting what someone else has and wanting to take it from them is nearly always a sin.

Here is an analogy- if my daughter made friends who really did not like her. Lets say those friends were causing her to make bad choices. Lets say those friends do not value my daughter or care about her. In fact they are taking advantage of her. I see my daughter ruining her chances at a great life for people who don't even like her as a person. How do I feel? Worried, greived, angry and jealous. I would be jealous of the influence of those friends. I would be jealous of the time spent with those friends. I would jealously long for the life that they took from my daughter. I would argue that my motivations would make that jealousy not sinful behaviour.

I guess you are referring to the passage,"I am a jealous God",in the Old Testament. The sin you refer to is coveting, wanting what someone else has, being jealous. It should sound like a case of,do what I say,and not what I do,but here we are talking about a piece of translation.I know the Christians believe every word in that book is literal truth, inspired by God.It could be that long ago when the work was written, the writer was trying to inspire a group of people who believed in many gods,to believe in one God.To do this he may have portrayed Jehovah as a strong,power-full,jealous God,who would not tolerate his people worshiping any other of the many gods of the time. So,if you must ponder Sin at all,try and think more deeply on the One God,who's perfection is that everything is perfection.

Perhaps a practical example will help us to understand the difference. If a husband sees another man flirting with his wife, he is right to be jealous, for only he has the right to flirt with his wife. This type of jealousy is not sinful. Rather, it is entirely appropriate. Being jealous for something that belongs to you is good and appropriate. Jealousy is a sin when it is a desire for something that does not belong to you. Worship, praise, honor, and adoration belong to God alone, for only He is truly worthy of it. Therefore, God is rightly jealous when worship, praise, honor, or adoration is given to idols. This is precisely the jealousy the Apostle Paul described in 2 Corinthians 11:2, "I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy..."

Jealousy it self is not a sin, it is why you are jealous and what you do that can be sin.

Anger can also be a sin, but God can be angry with the wicked.

Jesus was angry with some of the scribes and Phrases because they rejected the truth.

God is jealous for our love I mean think about it. You created a whole world with people and creatures of every kind and They didn't care at all about you. You loved them so much that you sent your only son to save these people who hate you and they continue to hate you. You have to watch them doing terrible things and totally ignoring you. Don't you think that you'd be a little jealous?? Besides he's not jealous as we are some people killing others so that they can get there money and stuff. He would never do that because he doesn't care about things like that

jealousy isnt actually on the list of "7deadly sins",nor is jealousy mentionedabout people(but it is about god) in the 10 commandments.in fact,in the 10,god states "i,thy god,am a jealous god-thou shalt have no other gods b4 me."did he really say that,tho-or is that more a king james bible, poetic thing?because "i ,thy god" sounds very "olde english" to me.anyway, jealousy is part of human nature.its survival.if an ancient woman with 3 kids said "go date whoever u want,i dont care",and her husband/mate went off with another cavewoman, she and her kids would have starved.we have a built-in reaction to threats against our physical/emotional security.and no one ever declared it a sin!no one religious, anyway.only in the 20th century did it become associated wiyth stalking, etc.a little jealosy is normal,a lot, obssessive.

God says God is a jealous God according to the Bible (and that is the only source that says it). To my knowledge jealousy is not a sin but something we choose.

You cannot measure God by human standards.

I am not a theological scholar, a priest, or a bibical knowledge buff... but just from an average Joe's standpoint I'd say that God's the only one with a right to be jealous. He is the most high and almighty and deserves the love and admiration of his children. So it would be understandable for him to feel jealous when his children devote their love to something lowly and wordly.
Compared to him we aren't even a drop in the bucket of goodness, so we have no right to be jealous of one another.

God is not a person, therfore he cannot sin. Just as an animal is not a person and it cannot sin. Human's sin! God is perfect and He can be whatever he wants because He is perfect. Because He is perfect, he does not want you to put anything or anyone or any god above Him and if you do he is jealous! You are his, yet, you worship another. .. who is not responsible for your existance. He wants His credit, which is due to Him!
