Lot's of good answers on this. Had three myself. You will be awake with a local given for the region of the back. It will still hurt but it's manageable. The more it hurts the more likely they are in the right spot, so think positively. Don't look at needles!! It doesn't take long. Hopefully you will start to feel better almost immediately, but take someone along to drive you. Even though you feel great the next day, still take it easy. Good Luck, it may last for years or maybe only a few weeks. Here's hoping your's lasts forever.

If the tattoo was done in sterile conditions, there is no risk to you or the child. You can have a tattoo if you get an epidural. If you have a lower back tattoo, it can be difficult to inject the epidural without scarring the tattoo. It is cosmetic only, placing an epidural over a tattoo is not going to harm the mother or baby. This is the ONLY problem with epidurals and tattoos. You can still donate blood is you have a tattoo. If you are in the US and live in a state that regulates tattooing (over 30 do), you can donate blood 6 or 9 months after getting a tattoo. Any other state and the wait is 1 year.

Epidural injection means the doctor will inject a drug (analgesic / pain killer) into the space around your spinal cord. The drug will act by blocking the pain sensation. This procedure is safe and you don't have to worry about spinal cord injury as it is usually performed by trained doctor. Also, the drug is injected in the space lower than where your spinal cord ends. So, there is no reason that you may injure the spinal cord (as many fears). The drug injected usually is a long acting analgesic, and therefore you'll get longer relief as compared to other oral or IV analgesic.

Nowadays epidural is used as a relief for chronic back pain (one time injection). And also can be given as infusion (whereby you leave a catheter inside the spinal space so that you can give an infusion for 2-3 days) during operation or labour.

I have had 3 epidurals over the past 2yrs.
It's a fairly simple procedure.
Getting the epidural doesn't hurt at all because the area where the needle will be inserted will be numb.
The only down side is that you have to stay in bed for 24hrs as your legs go numb.

Good Luck, hope it helps in alleviating your pain

I presume the epidural is for a chronic back condition my husband had it a number of years ago he was fine for a few days only it only works for some people but you owe it to yourself to give it a go it can't possibly be any worse than the pain you are experiencing now .
good luck with it and i hope it is a success for you

My ex-wife had one years ago. They gave her a small injection of local anaesthetic an then inserted a very fine tube into her spine (I didn't see the details from where I was sat). They attached this tube to a machine that delivered the painkiller and she went to sleep.

It was while she was having our first daughter. She never mentioned anything about it being uncomforatble or anything and as far as i could tell she was perfectly fine. You'll be okay, good luck.

Can't remember the first one too well, when i had my son it was done too late to have any real effect.. When i had my daughter i made sure it was in early, hurt at the time setting it up,they insert a small tube so the painkillers can get through, but worth it. Make sure you get booked in for one as early as possible,a trained anesthetist does it,and they're not always available, you wont be the only person wanting one.

My wife had one and was absolutely dreading it ( for a c-section). She sat on the edge of her trolley , leaned forward and the doctor inserted the needle into her low back. Once the needle was in, she totally forgot about it and her recovery was excellent - no back pains at all.

Don't worry.

Well not going to lie, it will hurt and be really uncomfy when they do the injection. But afterwards you will be fine in a few hours and the affects will last ages and hopefully fix your pain.

Yes, I had an epidural when I was in labor.

Basically you will feel a pinch and then they put the medicine in.

That's it......

You should be fine!
