I just got a 1998 VW Golf GTI with a 2 liter motor and a 5 speed tranny in trade for some goods and it has 198,000 miles on it. I was wondering how much further it may go? I do know it was well maintained by the previous owners.

Take care of a VW and it will run forever. Change the oil regularly, and make sure you get tune ups and change the other fluids at recommended intervals, along with belts and hoses. It will likely outlast your ownership of it.

I would also suggest switching to synthetic oil with 10,000 mile change intervals [synthetic oil never breaks down like conventional oil does, but it still gets contaminated with dirt and must be replaced] and using some premium octane fuel for a few tanks to clean the engine.

Good luck :)

Be gentle with it, do all you proper maint. and you could make it to 250k or even300k of course you will have to repair some things due to high milege but those german built cars are tough.
