If you want anything not to start at boot up this is how.
Go to start,run,-type in the dialog box-msconfig
click ok,that will take you to utilities,on the top tabs on the right
side end see startup, click that, all the programs that start when windows boots are listed, uncheck yahoo messenger and anything else you don't need to start right away, just make sure you know which ones, although it won't hurt anything if you make a mistake, just don't mess with any other tabs.
Click apply and ok or close, you will have to reboot but mr messenger won't start until you want him to.
This won't get rid of your icon or anything else, the messenger will still be there when your ready to use it.
This works very well on new programs you might download and they pop up on your screen.(msconfig)

Right click on Start and click on "Explore".
A split window will come up. Under your user name there will be a folder labeled "Start Menu". Double-click and find the 'Programs' folder.
Double-click to find the 'Start up' folder. Double-click to see contents of Start-up folder and remove or delete link to "Yahoo Messenger".
That should do it.

You can disable the programs that run during startups by disabling their automatic running. This can be done by using another software like Tune Up Utilities or from Windows itself

below the "Messenger" menu, choose "options". choose the "everyday" classification. Uncheck the field that asserts "once I start up my laptop, immediately start up Yahoo messenger." click "ok."
