Any ideas on whats the best way to store onions, I've got more then I need for the next few days and would like to keep them fresh for as long as possible.

I could keep them in a dark cubouard, keep them on the worktop under sunlight, or put them in the fridge, but what would be best?

How to store Onions?

Whole onions should be stored in cool dry, and dark place. The sunlight can make the onions taste bitter. The onions easily absorb moisture, making them mushy.
An old American technique is to cut a leg of a panty hose, and slide onions in one at a time and tie a knot. The hose is kept away from sun in the basement where it is cool. You can store onions this way for about 4 weeks.
Onions can be chopped up and put in zip-lock bags. Chopped onions can be stored in the refrigerator for 30 days. Chopped onions can be frozen for about six months.
Do not store whole onions next to whole potatoes, it will spoil them both.

Storing:
Because sweet onions are high in water and sugar content they require more care when storing, so treat them gently to avoid bruising. Store away from potatoes because they'll absorb water. Generally, sweet onions will keep for 4-6 weeks or longer. Cut onions should be wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerated. Favorite ways to store "sweets":

In the refrigerator: Store in a single layer in the vegetable bin on paper towels. Or, for longer storage, wrap in foil.

In pantyhose: Take a leg from a pair of clean, sheer pantyhose, drop an onion into the foot, tie a knot and repeat as necessary. Hang in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Cut above the knot when ready to use.

On racks or screens: Place on elevated racks or screens, not touching, in a cool area.

In the freezer: For long-term storage, sweet onions can be frozen, but their texture changes so they should be used only for cooking. Chop and place on a cookie sheet and place in the freezer. When frozen, store in freezer containers or bags. To store whole onions, peel, wash, core and freeze in a freezer-proof container or bag.

Drying: Chop and dry in the oven, using the lowest setting. Remove when thoroughly dry but not brown. Store at room temperature in airtight containers.

The fridge idea is good. Another one is brown paper bags in a cool dry place.Just cut them off an inch or two below the upper fold. Two of them side-by-side fit nicely in a standard-size cabinet, so I can sort red and yellow onions. Trim a smooth curve in the front face for easy access to the onions. The bags are sturdy enough that I can tug them out and shove them around while full of onions without fear of breakage, and the onions breathe well enough I haven't had any more problems with sprouting, smell or mold.

I have a simple answer based on my own experience. I got sick of throwing sprouting onions away so I started asking around and my late mother-in-law told me to roll them up in a brown paper bag and put them in the bottom of the fridge but not the crisper drawer. (too cold) I no longer throw onions away. They keep so long I use them up before it's an issue. They last several months stored this way, and you don't have to use tie your wife's pantyhose into knots, unless that's what you're into. Soon after I found all my fresh veggies and fruits benefit this way for longer term storage. They need to be kept cold once ripe, but not too cold, and they need to be in something that allows gases to escape which would otherwise cause fruits and veggies to spoil prematurely. Depending what it is it will keep from 3 weeks to 4 months stored this way.

Cut the leg off an old pair of clean pantyhose. Drop an onion in and tie a knot ... onion, knot, onion, knot until you run out of either onions or pantyhose. Hang in a cool, dark, ventilated area.

Cut onions off as needed.

Is it a good idea to store onions in a polystyrene box with lid with the layers separated by newspaper or not?

hmm, at home, we just chuck them a this plastic basket. and it lasts for long. although there is another plastic basket above it containing garlic or ginger. but then again, most food here in my country uses onions so we use them up pretty quickly. but maybe just storing it in the pantry would do if it wont take such long a time for you to use them

the best way to store onions is to tightly close them in a ziploc bag and put them in the freezer
