Everyone always talks about what are you going to look like when you get 80 with all those tattoos. I am more worried about will I have money to buy medicine....I have seen old people walk out of the pharmacy without their pills because they can not afford them, will my spouse die before me and I will have to live alone, will my hips hold up or will I need surgery or a walker, will my hearing go, will I be able to drive to get my groceries, what shape will this world be in then. Really is having some tattoos on your body at 80 even something that should cross the minds of the people who always ask this stupid question?

I remember watching old episodes of The Twilight Zone, and they seemed to have a real fixation on the age of 70. People at the end of their lives, in great pain, dying, etc. Nowadays, 70 - although hardly young - isn't the same thing. Lots of folks are pretty active into their 70s as gerontology matures (pun intended) and people take better care of themselves. It's no longer the kiss of death to hit your 8th decade.

I do wonder if the current fixation on 80 - I see that elsewhere in addition to here - will see a similar change as we work towards that age. I've seen some projections that say people now in the 35-45 category should live into their 90s or later on a fairly common basis, with breaking the century mark not that big of a deal.

I do know it does seem that the wrinkly effects are more due to how much sun, poor health (and smoking!) folks have in their lives rather than just age itself. I have a 96 (!) year old neighbor who's quite active & healthy, but she fully admits that her excessive wrinkles are at least in part due to her getting lots of sun when younger (for the most part she stays out of it now, wears a hat, uses sunblock, etc). Her "baby" sister of 88 lives across the way, also pretty active, who's always avoided the sun. Although obviously not below retirement age, I initially thought she was my neighbor's daughter - 50-60 or so.

You are totally right Betty...there are SO many other factors out there that are MUCH more important than whether an individual has a tattoo or not and how it's going to look when one ages.

Another way to look at the "how is it going to look" question is this way... A tattoo is somewhat a peek into or a door into your life...it may help bring back a memory and may just be a little reminder to you about the life that you lived when you were younger. Nothing wrong with that, especially if it potentially brings about happiness to an individual...

I know that I'll forever look at my tattoo and always think about my daughter. Even when I'm in the dressing room and I catch sight of my tattoo in the mirror...it makes me smile. When I get older??? It will be a little air of sunshine...I'll always have her picture with me. Even if my body doesn't look exactly as it does now, I'll still have it with me....

Ok...cheesy episode done... :)

No kidding! You are going to get old and wrinkly whether you have a tattoo or not. It amazes me that people are so worried about this. I've been to the beach - I've seen a lot of old, wrinkly bodies in bikinis. You've got to give those old people props for being brave enough to do that. Now put a tattoo on them and I think - tough old bird, wonder what the story is behind that?
Yes, I just hope I do get to grow old and wrinkly! Who cares what's on my skin at that point.

Those stupid people are just exactly that- STUPID! I have tattoos and I don't even think about what they will look like when I get old. I'm a girl too! I suppose if the color fades out or they turn green when I'm 80, I'll just have to get them recolored.

I agree, it is a stupid question. Why do they care what I do/did to my body and what it will look like when I am old. When I am old I won't care about my tattoo and how it faded or that some idiot thinks I made a mistake. My favorite question is "why do you have tattoos?" I don't even justify that one with an answer anymore. Mind your own business, if you don't like it you don't have to look at it.

I was shocked to hear my brother say the same thing, he's worked in a nursing home and seen old wrinkly tattoos. I say you will already be wrinkly so why not at least have decorated wrinkly skin. I am more worried about will my children take care of me and will I die peacefully then what the ladies in my bridge club think of my tattoos.

Exactly, I've made this point a couple times in previous questions, but it doesn't seem to make a difference, its still a favorite "argument" among tattoo haters her on Y!A. Too bad most of them only come to this category once in a blue moon to make this point, and they don't usually see the unexpectedly (to them) educated points we make here all the time that disprove almost everything they say.

yeah i have a beautiful tattoo on my lower back, had it done by the best artist. i had a girl say that to me. it's like when your 80 yrs old it isn't going to matter. at least when our skin is wrinkling it will have some color and detail to it because all dried up . no, i wouldn't worry about that. it's all good.
