If a wall is textured with drywall mud, how long does that need to dry before painting? I see people asking about "plaster" -- but that is something different than drywall mud, yes? My paint can says to wait 30 days before painting after plastering -- but I don't know if they are referring to drywall mud or "real" plaster. I know that contractors certainly don't wait 30 days after texturing a wall to paint -- they usually have the whole drywall, mudding, texturing, and painting done within a week or so. Can someone give me a definite answer?

Since texturing is thicker than joints or repairs, I would wait overnight. Should not require anymore than that. Plaster is also thicker than texturing with drywall compound, thats why it takes longer to dry. If you painted it before it was dry, the moisture would be incapsulated and the integrity of the plaster ( and paint) would be compromised.

Let the texture dry over night if you have good ventilation and low humidity. Longer with poor ventilation and higher humidity. Then prime and paint. It will come out fine. I did a whole house this way last fall. In good weather it was ready for paint the next day. When it was raining, I waited an extra day to paint.
