first clean down walls and dampen down ..if the wall is a bit dodgy roll on a coat of uni bond before you put on the scratch coat ..MOST IMPORTANT ..the material to use is PLASTERING SAND ..and cement ..4 or 5 to one BY WEIGHT not volume ..in other words 1 shovel of sand weighs more than a shovel of cement ..therefore weigh the sand ..and if you have 60 lbs of sand .then you must add 15 pounds of cement ..you can use masonry cement ..this has lime in it and makes the material more pliable ..when you have put on the first coat ..then you have to scratch it ..put some nails in your float ..and run over it cutting down the high spots ..leave for twenty four hours before you apply the second coat ..then you will need a straight edge to level wall ..don't rub it up until the material starts to pick up ..and try and keep it as level as possible ..don't forget plastering sand only

My partners a plasterer and rendering is more difficult than it looks. Especially if you want it to look half decent. I'd suggest getting someone in.

It's far less hastle!
