Ok, my daughter has been ill on and off since March mostly with fever and diarrohea. She has been to doctors umpteen times and has recently been referred to hospital. No-one knows what is causing the illness, but the hospital suspects a urine infection (because they have tested everything else).

The hospital want a "fresh catch urine sample" from her - meaning they want us to catch the pee. But this is proving almost impossible - she sneaks off to pee - when you do catch her peeing and place the cup between her legs she stops immediately so that there isnt enough sample to use. We have to use a particular sterile cup to catch the pee, but nothing is allowed to touch the inside of the cup except her pee, which is difficualt if you have to grab it in a hurry to catch her peeing!!

I am at the end of my tether - we are not allowed to use the sample we took using a pee bag (inserted under the nappy) because they felt the sample would be contiminated. Anyone been thru this? Help

hi april - we discussed the catheter idea early on but it was said that it wouldnt work because she probably wouldnt allow them to insert it, she would fight and it could end up hurting/injuring her.

could you take a potty chair to the Drs office. take some clorox wipes with you and wipe it down. if she pees in it you can then put it in the cup. I am surprised they wont use the bag you "tape" on her under her diaper. would they use it if it was fresh and you waited at the Drs office?
good luck. hope something works out

How about getting her to pee into a sterile potty and then taking the sample from there? Or, and don't laugh, get yourself a cup that looks the same and let her see you pee in the cup and then see if she might pee into the sterile one you have from the doctors (could be a last resort!). I know it sounds ridiculous but one thing I learnt from children in my years of working with them is sometimes if they see you doing something they don't mind having a go or copying, especially if it's something they are anxious about . She's only young and probably doesn't have a clue whats going on. I have worked with a little girl that had problems and was constantly having to give samples, luckly for us her parents did them at home. Good luck and I hope they find out whats going on.

My son was a born prem, they took urine directly from his bladder and still they only suspected an infection, a urine sample is not the be all and end all. Ask for some general antibiotics, there are certain ones that help certain conditions but are still broad ranging enough to help with several different infections. Its not right that your daughter is suffering in the meantime. Wouldn't it be better if someone took an educated guess and prescribed something to make her better instead of messing about?!?!?!

Dig your heels in and get a second opinion if necessary. Alternatively get her admitted onto the day ward and get the nurses to run around after her, its their job and you never know, she might do it for them!

Good luck, sorry about the ramble xxx

The nurses should be able to insert a catheter into her bladder. I would assume they should have experience with children and should be able to do it. If they won't, how about going to her pediatrician, they should be more experienced with this.

This whole thing must be so stressful but if they just go ahead and do the cathether it'll be over fast and you'll have the fresh sample. The important thing is that they figure out what's wrong with your daughter!

My Son had the same problem in March. Really high fever, like 106.2 and we couldn't get it under controll. He's 2 and they did a catheder. It's the hardest thing to hold your child down but it was so fast and super easy. And my little guy is very strong it took 3 of us to hold him down...he also had this done at 18 months for a different problem. She may scream and it'll break your heart. But you can't have UTI. It can cause MAJOR problems in little ones.

Good Luck!

I'm not sure if how to make her pee in a cup. If she is that sick and they really need to to get a pee sample ask about them inserting a cathadar. This way the will get the fresh urine. I hope your little one feels better.

That sounds impossible! Poor you. First I'd suggest you stop her going to the loo without you- keep a watch on her. Perhaps the best thing to do is to bribe her, make it a fun game, the more of your wee you do in here the more of these sweets you can have. As I said it sounds like an impossible task, especially as she is so little- but they normally respond to bribery! good luck.

Sterilize her baby potty, wash it in hot boiling water then wrap it in plastic wrap til she needs to go potty. the sample should be a clean catch, and can be transferred into the sterile jar. It does work.

I comprehend the protection in it, through fact I nursed my own son. start up scheduling her nap(s) in the process the day. If she sleeps for a protracted quantity of time in the process the day, decrease it in a million/2, wake her up, and keep her wide awake. this might start up getting her on the schedule she desires to be on. approximately an hour earlier bedtime, feed her some cereal with or with out fruit reckoning on how she prefers it, and introduce her to a sippy cup with formulation or milk. make constructive she has an entire abdomen earlier mattress. After feeding her, provide her a heat tub, and use chamomile and/or lavendar in her water in case you're waiting to. the warmth temperature and smells will help loosen up her and get her waiting for mattress, and make a huge deal approximately getting her into her crib for the evening. enable her think of it relatively is a definite experience. keep her in this schedule for some week, and he or she might want for use to it. I properly comprehend how coronary heart-wrenching it relatively is listening to your new child cry for you for some reason or yet another, yet a company yet loving hand is important by using the discern sometimes. suitable desires to you.
