Well, I dont think its inappropriate to wear white or ivory to a wedding anymore. Just like its ok to wear white in winters now. Which used to be something that was put away in the fall, until spring. But if you decide to wear white, use some color somwhere in the dress, a colored sash, or shawl or shoes. Actually, newport news has just launched a "what to wear to a wedding campaign" Go to their website.. I will provide with you a link..there are ideas there and PICTURES of dresses and accessories, to give you a good idea for whatever type of wedding you are attending..including upscale city weddings, or formal...to even beach and garden. Order if you want to, or take the ideas and go shopping somwhere else!

WELL it depends on several factors. Is it an evening wedding? Is it an outside wedding? What season is it being held? If it is an evening wedding, you can always pull of the little black dress, especially because it is formal. You can find them from plain to glamorous (think cocktail) but personally, I would purchase an inexpensive black dress and spend the money on the accessories and shoes (details details). If it is a late afternoon wedding you can get by with the same dress code. Full length is somewhat faux pas unless you find EXACTLY the right dress...but not knowing your height/weight it is difficult to determine what that might be for you. If the dress is mid morning or mid day and a summer wedding, you can wear something bright (hot pink/orange) but don't go so much with the glam. Keep it simple but EXPENSIVE. Light blue is a GREAT color at summer weddings, so is peach and seafoam green but you must take care that the mother of the bride or groom is not wearing it. My personal favorite and a very chic colour is chartuse green. Try to go with a silk fabric if possible. Absolutely do NOT wear white OR offwhite/beige. If it is a fall wedding, you can pull off maroon, or even red. But be careful depending upon your coloration. You don't want to look as if you've been hooking on Burboun St. Hope this helps.

depends on how formal it is. About.com has some good ideas for guest wear.
I went to a black tie formal wedding in Manhattan a month ago, and the wedding ceremony was after 5, and the reception didn't start till 7:30, so I wore a strapless floor length blue dress with a wrap and some sparkly hairclips. The dress itself was very simple, so I didn't upstage anybody, but it seemed to fit that time.
Formal nighttime receptions can let you wear a long dress in richer colors than daytime weddings do. I thought it was a blast to get to be so fancy.
Good luck, and have fun!!

If it is a formal event you should wear a long frock, in a style that suits you. Avoid the colours of the bridal party (if you know what they are). And tradition says that you shouldn't wear either black or white.
Team it with dressy shoes, a small bag, and whatever jewelery you feel is appropriate.
And remember that these people wanted you at their wedding, so relax and enjoy yourself!

You should not wear a long gown because it detracts from the bridal party. The same holds true for white, ivory or any colors in the bridal party. Do wear a dress that would be considered appropriate for a formal cocktail party or elegant restaurant. Incidentally, black is no longer considered tabu at a wedding.

For a truly formal wedding, you need to wear a long gown.

Wear a one-piece jumpsuit......sexy, but still classy and appropriate. You can team it up with a sexy pair of stiletto lace-up heels.
