86 VW Vanagon, has been sitting in storage for 3 months. Now can't start it. Spraying starter fluid into air intake, it starts right away, then immediately dies, so I assume gas isn't getting through. Any ideas where I start to figure out what's going on pls?

first off.. do you HAVE gas reaching the carb.?

(assuming that there IS gas in the tank - 3 month old gas is not likely to be bad so we will skip the part about draining and replacing the gas)

1) Disconnect the fuel line at the carb and put it in a glass or bottle..crank the engine.. is there gas in the bottle? If not, your problem lies in the tank, the fuel filter or in the fuel pump itself.

2) Got gas? Check the float valve in the carb.
first.. rap it a few times on the side.. sometimes it has corroded a bit from non-use and the whack will get it loose ..
Still no good.. pul the carb off (easy - two nuts and some connections.. ) and carefully take off the top.. make sure the float moves up and down and that the needle valve is working.

3) Still nothing? Check all your vacume hoses.. not enough vacume and maybe the gas is simply not be sucked in.

4) Still nothing.. try a replacement carb..

Got to be one of those... if the starter fluid makes it run.

good luck

.

I could never afford to buy one ,but have driven several types of air cooled VW, and the normal handling problem was the front end would start to lift and then weave, caused by the lack of a front air dam spoiler under the front bumper, an alternative to the VW t1,t3,t4, cure of a paving slab or a bag of cement in the boot space at the front, this is not a cure for the van only way was to either lower the suspension or fit an air dam spoiler ,the ones i saw were neat looking and good at keeping the van on the straight and narrow, prices are very expensine as T2s are rarer and rare also agood ones very hard to find without extensive rebuilding , a type 3 as was suggested would be better and you can check what equipment is fitted before purchasing. Cheers And happy hunting either way T2 or T3.

Is the fuel pump faulty? That would be the most common reason for fuel not getting through. It might also have a reset button on it that you could possibly press. If it was low on fuel & cut out, you can refill & press the reset to start it. If there's plenty of fuel, try testing the fuel pump.

If the van has fuel injection you sound try and turn the ignition on and bleed the injectors. If fuel is not coming through work your way back to the fuel pump and check that it is running. If not you will need to locate the fuel pump trip switch and re-set it.

pump out the fuel tank, and fill it with FRESH gasoline..

install NEW gas filters, and test for a good blue spark at the spark plugs.

VW engines are usually very simple

Check your fuel filter. If it hasn't been changed recently it might be gummed up from sitting idle so long.
