he does not..and my partner and i were discussing how i would get pregnet if i have this ..is it only if i have an outbreak..does he have to have protection...to get me pregnant?how does that work??? and what about oral sex..is it okay for him to go down on me?

WOW, please ignore michael r's answer. Herpes is certainly not something you should kill yourself over. I reported him by the way.

To answer your questions though...

If a person has genital herpes, there is ALWAYS going to be a chance they can spread it to someone else. It doesn't matter what kind of medication they are on, what kind of precautions they take, or whether they are having an outbreak or not. There will ALWAYS be a chance they can spread it.

Unfortunately, the only way for a couple to conceive (other that in Vito fertilization and other artificial methods) is by having unprotected sex. The best time to try and become pregnant without your partner contracting the virus is when you are NOT having an outbreak. It's also best if you are on medication for it. Like I said earlier, there is always a chance you will spread it, but it's less likely if you are on medication and you are not on an outbreak.

I was with my ex for almost 4 years and he never contracted the virus from me, so it is definitely possible to not spread it. But, I was with my fiance (boyfriend at the time) for about 4 months before he contracted the virus from me.

Oral sex can also spread herpes. If he was to give you oral sex it is possible for him to develop cold sores from you. He would have cold sores caused by herpes simplex virus 2 (usually cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus 1). If he is going to give you oral sex I would highly suggest he protect himself by wearing a dental dam. It's also a good idea for you to be on medication and NEVER have oral sex when you are having an outbreak.

Nothing is 100% effective in preventing the spread of genital herpes, or any other STD (except abstinence).

My best friend has had genital herpes for about eight months now, and it's been really rough. She's had about 7 outbreaks. Everywhere I read it says it stops flaring up so much after time, but its not getting less frequent for her. She's been on Antiviral meds the whole time, too. She also has type 1 diabetes which she has had her whole life, which really weakens her immune system. Will it ever get better?

Having herpes does not affect your ability to become pregnant. However, if a woman has an active herpes infection at the time of childbirth, she has to have a c-section to avoid transmission to the infant. Ocular (eye) herpes can cause blindness.

You may still transmit the disease when you are symptom-free, because it is possible to asymptomatically be "shedding" the virus. For that reason, I would recommend getting on Valtrex, for suppression, as your first line of defense from giving it to him. Condoms are an excellent second line of defense.

Do not have sex any time that you experience any pain, burning, itching, or any physical abnormality. It is possible for an outbreak to be mistaken for something harmless, such as an ingrown hair.

Regarding oral sex, it is possible for him to get HSV-2 (genital herpes) in his mouth. At the same time, it is possible for him to transmit HSV-1 (fever blister type oral herpes) to the genitals. Therefore, anytime that either of you may be experiencing any kind of symptoms, avoid contact. And again, Valtrex is your friend in reducing the number of outbreaks and shedding periods.

As others have said, herpes is caused by HSV (herpes simplex virus) and genital warts by HPV (human papillomavirus). They are different viruses with different symptoms and different treatments.
