The only safe restricted diet that I've seen is in Dr Fuhrman's book Eat to Live.
The people at caloriesperhour.com agree.
IF you can follow the diet, you will lose weight. It can be difficult though as you need to eat A LOT of food. (1 pound of raw green leafy vegetables every day.)
Go to the library and check out the book.

The first question I would ask is how much you weigh? Unless you are 4'8 and 82 pounds a 1200 calorie day is very low. Check out free websites like fitday.com for calorie recommendations.
You shouldn't consume less than 1000 calories under your recommended daily intake. Else you are under consuming and your body will go into "Starvation Mode" and begin to break down the protein in muscle for fuel. Over the long term this is a bad idea.
If you are overweight, I would say this...You didn't get overweight over night and you aren't going to lose weight over night. Slow adaptations in you eating and exercise is the way to go.
In terms of healthy eating, take a look at the Mediterranean diets. They tend to have alot of Vegetables, Olive Oil, fish, etc. Good luck.

It is hard to function on a 1200 calorie diet, your muscles need more. Granted you would loose weight quickly but it would be muscle mass. Your body will say holy crap, and go into defence. Your body wants fat and will keep the fat on you but will "eat" away at your muscles.
If this is still what you want to do look at salads (no cheese, croutons, dressing) and for meat try tuna or another white fish. Milk has quite a few calories but they are worth it for the calcium. Don't forget about minerals and vitamins (as you will not be consuming enough through eating)
Just read labels. If you know something is bad for you, put it down and eat celery. If you want something sweet try water melon. Breads are high in carbs and calories so try to look for low carb bread (weight watchers).
Best of luck.
Don't for get to exercise.

Generally a 1200 calorie is not a diet at all, because it's not healthy. Unless you are very small, this isn't going to do you any good, or be extreme, it will just make you sick. . Look into something more like 1500-1800 calories.
