I've been working for a contract cleaning company for 6yrs , Recently the job of support manager became available, I applied for it straight away to be told exactly 4days later that the job has been given to another employee? To my shock i have found out today 1 day later that the job was given to a Polish woman who has only been working for the company for 7 damn weeks? where's the justice?? especially as she can only speak about a dozen words of english? do you think this is outrageous and is our country going to pieces ! ! ! !

submitted that way? YES i still would be complaining , As the job of support manager means that the person in that position has to be mobile? and for our company that means being able to cover over 70sq miles , And this young lady who has been given the job doesnt even have a driving license and that information has come from her brother who works for us too and is also very upset that she got it .

I wouldn't say it was racism or the fact she is female. Sometimes within a company, the big boss thinks that getting someone new into a position, who doesn't know people is better. I had a supervisor who was a normal employee one day and then he was made a supervisor, he found it very hard to adjust as people treated him as a friend before, he would give a direct order and people would do as they wanted. In the end he had to leave because people stopped showing him respect and he was doing the majority of the work himself because he couldn't cope with the way his so called 'friends' changed towards him and treated him like an outsider when he gave an order, even though he'd been working for the company a very long time with most of these people and knew his job very well.
If you really want to enter the management area then I would suggest going to a different company.

What happened is that your company chose the Polish girl on the grounds of her work ethic. A lot of Anglo Saxons think they are the world leaders when it comes to the work ethic based upon the Protestant notion of hard work and thrift.
I have worked with Poles and have found them in most cases to be the hardest workers I have ever known. One Polish guy I know thinks that the working day is 12 hours long with a half hour break at the six hour point.
I will not say more on this but just point you to the issue of religion. Your boss may very well have more in common with this Polish girl [age not a consideration] than you think.

You've given me an idea. I'm going to start dressing like a Polish woman, maybe I can get a good job and quick promotion then.
Does the Pole have a degree in Contract Cleaning? I hear you can get one in Luton, and a lot of East Europeans study there.
Polish women are stereotypical cleaners. There are loads throughout Europe, they even outnumber Philippines now. Perhaps the company has some quota policy for promotion of those who make up the bulk of the workforce. Or maybe she was forced into the promotion by the Washia (Polish cleaning Mafia).

I know why they like Polish workers. I don't want to offend anybody, there must be some good Poles there as well, but I just found out from experience with working with hundreds of Polish people that they tend to make a lot of effort to be liked by their bosses. They put such an act of pretending to be hard-working and reliable workforce, which is in most cases is just that, facade, when the boss is around. Never mind all the back stabbing and bad mouthing, bosses will never find out about that. Polish people are not stupid to let their true opinions and feelings to be known to the people on whom they depend.

My daughter works at a local factory, of the 123 employees, 31 are English, the rest being Polish.
The company rent houses on behalf of the Polish workers. By the time the company have taken stoppages out of the Polish workers wages, the polish workers are left with about £60 a week.
An interpreter is used at the factory to communicate with the workers and has to spend a couple of days at the start of each polish workers employment teaching them how to write numbers in English.
They take 15 to 20 minutes for a tea break which is only supposed to last 10 minutes meaning someone else has to wait for theirs and when challenged about it, state that they do not understand.
They cannot be given council housing as British council houses are not up to European Standards and the councils fear that the polish will claim against them if they are issued a house.
Either your company have no respect for English workers, your female boss is descriminating against men or the company can forsee financial problems ahead and replacing the workforce with foreign labour to whom they have less commitment if they should close down.
Either way the company is Poop, get out of it and leave it to the Poles.

Where I previously worked, in the space of three months, my ex-employer employed 8 Polish people and gave them all 60 hour weeks earning less than minimum wage. At the same time, all the English staff suddenly found that their hours were reduced to 16 which prompted us to look for other jobs. Needless to say, many of us reported him but as far as I know, the Polish people still work there.
Dispute it with your boss by all means but be prepared to look for another job - I'm afraid you have no hope against cheaper workforce being exploited by money-grabbing companies.

I don't think her nationality should be a consideration, but I do think its an absolute disgrace that your far greater experience wasn't taken into account. There's far too much of that going on these days.
I have had similar experiences in the past where younger, less experienced people leapfrogged my position. They didn't last long though since they were rubbish at the job, and I ended up doing their work anyway. I didn't get any more money for doing the extra work though. Maybe that was the plan all along come to think of it.

Is your boss a male , is the Polish lady good looking, could have been a pillow talk interview working abit of overtime ,as she got a work permit , is she an illegal immigrant, can she cope with the health and safety of her job, IE read on the health and safety notices that are law for all employees, can she work out how much cleanser that you have to use of the labels, God , some people who employ just for looks do not look into the wider aspect of the employment laws, it alright saying that it is the Euro Market policy, but again UK is the only country that adheres to it , if you breath and you are a foreigner you get priority, I can only sympathise with you I would have a go at the boss and look for another job you could have him for discrimination.

your boss made a huge mistake, a lot of companies are trying to get more productivity by causing dissent among the workers. where as before you would have worked harder and done more that expected because your a good worker and enjoy the work. now that you've been shat on from a great height you'll probably do only whats required and no more, and i wouldnt blame ya. i used to work for a very large industrial cleaners subbed out as a yard man, drove the forklift emptied the bins swept the compound yard maintained the pallets ordered the skips got the compactor swapped over i even tipped lorries for them, which wasnt my job. i never once let their management pull rank on me, i took orders only from my boss, who i only seen once in 2 years. in all weathers i was outside on my own with no help and i loved it. so my advice is not to take your orders from this newstart boss but from the boss over her. also look for a new job.
