I want to have a Mexican-Themed party for my birthday. I wanted to serve margaritas, chips, dips, and taco salads. I wanted to make mini salad bowls like the ones in restaurants (with the fried tortilla). I dont want to buy the tortilla fruer since this is the only time I'll be using it and I'm on a tight budget. Any suggestions on how to do it without a deep fryer or the tortilla fyer itself? I was thinking about using the small taco-sized flour tortillas. Thanks in advance. I was planning on calling my party "Diez de Mayo" since my d-day is on May 10th.. Cool, huh?

I need to clarify, I want to make tortilla bowls. Like the ones used to serve salads in Mexican restaurants (I usually order Taco Salad and they usually come in a crispy bowl made out of fried flour tortilla). I wanna make the salads appetizer size. Thanks!!!

how weird i don't remember any bowl tortilla here in mexico
:S
it sounds like the tacos from taco bell
they have nothing mexican in them!
:S
if you want to make a sope which I think is what your description intends
you have to get the dough made usually from a "tortilleria" they sold it on kilos here, but may be it be lbs in US.
then manually do what you want with it
like play do xP
then fry it with oil (any oil works)
check that the dough get crispy and not toasted as a dorito, so they don't break when you move them or put the veggies on it.
I f you want to give it a mexican style flavor put some rebanated cheese in em (after the veggies and meat or whatever you want to put in).
And make a tomate sauce yourself (gotta be hot and put in any order you want)

My mom, grandma and family knows how to do these. Actually sometimes my mom do her own "tostadas"
xP

If you wan to give your party a different theme
put it
"A La Madre"
xP
ten of mayo is mother's day in here
jaja
ok no
:P
so silly of me
have a nice party
:)

The thing here is that, as said, usually corn tortillas get fried better than flour ones, but it all depends on what you expect to get.

Now, about the frying itself, using a deep saucepan filled with some oil (enough to cover the tortillas) should work fine. A wok could work as well. If you want them to be bowl-shaped, put them on a deep metallic ladle a press down lightly with another ladle (a smaller ladle works best) to give it a bowl shape. Deep fry them, and as soon as the tortilla is somewhat fried, you can remove the pressuring ladle to let it fry easier and better. Kind of a hassle, but it is an option.

Hope it works for you, have a very happy 10 de mayo B-day! ;)

Use only corn tortillas.

Put five or six of them in a stack.

Heat peanut oil. enough to cover the bottom of a large hot frying pan.

Put the stack in, wait about a minute, turn the whole stack over.

Then take the top tortilla and turn it over so now it's touching the one below it.

Then go down two or three tortillas and turn that stack over.

Then turn the whole stack over. Then turn the top one over.

You keep doing that so the oil from each tortilla gets soaked into one side of a tortilla and that way you distribute the oil and the heat.

It's like shuffling a deck of cards, only the cards are tortillas and the idea is to get each side of each one exposed to the heat and to the hot oil.

When all tortillas are heated and touched with oil remove the stack and you're done. Keep them warm by keeping them covered.

The more you cook them, the harder they get.

For a different, less oily taste, you can spray each side of them with non stick spray, stack them in a bowl, cover the bowl and heat it for about 40 sec. in a microwave. Not as good.

You can add butter to the oil for a little more flavor.

Don't use flour tortillas. If you are using a teflon pan make sure not to use a metal spatula.

This may be very effortless and is going in combination rapid. Enchilada casserole Preheat oven to 350 levels one million pound hamburger, browned with one million medium onion, chopped. Add I6 oz.. of your favourite salsa and a small can of chopped black olives. Take an 8X8 pan and layer probably the most meat blend, cheddar and mozzarella cheese, tortilla portions to hide, a further layer of the beef blend, cheeses, and tortillas. Continue layering, completing up with cheeses. Put in oven for approximately 20 mins or till bubbly. Yum!

well, flat fried tortillas are called Tostadas... they are fried in a pan with oil (not olive), until they are crunchy but not burnt...

then you can put refried beans on it with cream and cheese or chicken or shredded meat ...well anything you want, but this ingredients are typically mexican...

but flour tortillas are not as nice are corn...so better use corn tortillas :)

*update: for "bowls" then you need to use a soup pan or something deep and a laddle to hold it down and while it fries it will take the shape... then you just need to put it over paper towels :)

and well, have a wonderful birthday!!

Im not sure how to fry them like a bowl, but you can spray cooking oil on them or even just slightly oil them, (flour tortillias) put them in the oven over a glass bowl or just ceramic bowl and bake them for a few minutes. It should work. good luck

OK, here goes...

Use a small strainer - like for tea, two one inside and then deep fry. You will have SMALL very SMALL bowls for tiney appetizers.

or

Use food strainers of two sizes, inside each other and deep fry - will be the size of your tortilla.

Be sure to put the tortilla between the strainers.

I know for sure you do not want to use flour tortillas, use corn, they will turn out better.
