Well first of all it is important to realize that a cold is a Virus. That means a couple things:

#1 It cannot be "cured", but it IS treatable.
#2 Antibiotics have NO effect on it; antibiotics are for bacteria, not viruses.

Also, before I go on, I want to say that I am obviously not a doctor, and any pills or vitamins I recommend should be approved by a doctor.

Echinacea: GREAT for colds. It is an all natural extract of the purple coneflower. Native Americans used it extensively. You can find it in the vitamin/supplement section of any pharmacy or grocery store. It is an immune booster. A word of caution though---it should only be taken AS DIRECTED on the bottle, and for no more than 2 weeks, as it can be hard for the liver to process.

ZINC:
Want to get over a cold quicker? Want it to be less severe? Then buy some zinc vitamins or Zycam, and use as directed. Like Echinacea, it is an immune booster. Safe and easy to find in a pharmacy or grocery store.

Vitamin C:
The old staple. Not quite as powerful as Zinc or Echinacea, but still boosts the immune system.

Vitamin E:
Good for the skin, good for controlling free radicals (the bad stuff that can cause things like cancer, infection, tumors, etc.) and also an immune booster.

When I get ill, I use all of these vitamins at once to attack my cold. All of them work together to give the immune system a real boost. They make colds shorter and less severe. Again, consult your doctor or family pharmacist before you take any of them.

NEVER TAKE ANTIBIOTICS FOR A COLD!!!! Antibiotics are used for bacterial infections...AKA, strep throat, ear infections, urinary tract infections, etc. Antibiotics kill only bacteria---the problem is, that they kill all the GOOD bacteria, too. That is why it is common for young women to get yeast infections while taking them---they kill all the good bacteria we need, that live in our bodies. I actually take acidophilus; that is PRO biotic. It is also in all yogurts, and is good for you. Although, I do not recommend it when you have a cold.

Other good things to ease a cold:

Over the counter medicines. But be wary of those that are cough "suppressants". You do not want to suppress a cough, because it is what is expelling the bad phlegm and mucus. You want an "expectorant". This makes you cough less, but when you do, you are able to get more mucus out.

WATER: I cannot ever stress enough that drinking lots and lots and LOTS of water when you have a cold is SO good for you. It helps to clear the sinuses by thinning mucus. This also helps control coughing.

Orange juice. Great for colds as it has tons of immune boosters, especially naturally occurring Vitamin C.

Chicken Soup. Also has immune boosters, and being warm, can soothe the throat. Generally very good for you.

Hot tea. (Non caffeinated). Can soothe the throat a great deal and lessen coughing. For an extra kick, melt a cough drop in the hot tea. Doesn't taste all that good, but it is one of the best coughing remedies I have ever tried.

Vick's VapoRub: An old classic. Put it on your chest, forehead, and pressure filled sinus areas. (Be careful to avoid getting too close to the eyes, as just the fumes will make them water.)

When all else fails, if you are still sick, see a doctor. You may have strep, and infection or the flu.

Chicken soup has got to be the best cure for a cold no mater hot or cold the weather might be. At same point in time you will lose your appetite and that's when the soup comes into play, great for any sickness.

I prefer not to rely on medicines either, when I can avoid it: Some of them will make me sick as a dog.

Hot tea with lemon and honey is helpful, and so are chicken soup and bouillon. If you can handle it, try hot spicy foods too: There is something about onions, garlic, and hot peppers that germs don't like. Don't forget to drink plenty of water. Use steam: That will help with your nose.

And get plenty of rest.

i'm gettin over a bad cold and couldn't make it thru without nyquil but just laying around with a blanket n glass of juice next to me helped..... best thing is drink lots of liquid like water, hot stuff like tea with honey & lemon, apple cider, there's vitamin c drink mixes u can drink warm & that includes broth soups, jello and popsicles- pineapple juice is less acidic than orange & it breaks down mucus......what to eat; stuff with garlic, oregano or sage in it, chicken, tomatoes, bananas & oatmeal (or whole grains)- avoid dairy cuz it increases phlem.....theres some cough drops that helps the tickle & dry feeling- halls bursts helped sooth my throat (apple flavor taste good), warm shower or bath helps achy feeling, gargle with warm salt water for soar throat and get lots of rest- if its real bad and don't wanna take meds u probably should see a doctor.....don't keep using same dishes and wash them to avoid spreading germs
