I had surgery yesterday, and am on Tylenol 3 and amoxicillin. I have a really sore throat and was hoping to take some sudafed or something at the same time. Is this allowed?

If you had surgery under general anesthesia, your throat is probably sore due to the tube they put in your throat after they put you "under". Many people don't realize that when they have surgery, they get a tube put in their throat, mostly as a safety precaution in case something goes wrong during surgery. This tube, or the removal of the tube before you wake up, can cause an intensely sore throat. My son has had surgery under general anesthesia three times, complained of a very sore throat every single time after surgery.

The sudafed probably won't help you (although it probably won't hurt you either, if you take it with your pain med and antibiotic. Try some Chloraseptic spray, or something else that numbs the throat.

I'm an RN at an ER. Tylenol 3 is a very mild drug. When taken with Sudafed the only thing that would happen is it would make you a bit more tired. If you are a smoker, the tube put down your throat during surgery causes even more pain that a non-smoker. So in a nut-shell it is fine to take together. If you don't want to be so sluggish, take them about 2 hour apart from one another. That is what we do at the Hospital. Feel Better.

The reason you have a sore throat is if you had general anesthesia for your surgery yesterday, you were most likely intubated (had a tube put down your throat for the general anesthesia) - but then, you don't specify if you are sick or just have a sore throat only. I've had many surgeries and found that sore throat lozenges or the spray work fine. Intubation really is harsh on the throat, which is why it hurts so much today. The sore throat should only last about 2-3 days at the most Sudafed is really for stuffy noses.

I wish you a nice recovery and hope it's not to difficult on you - good luck!

While you can take most drugs after you did tylenol, that aspirin you are wondering about is a maybe maybe-not. I have searched the net and any information about taking these 2 very common drugs at the same time is conspicuous by its absence. There fore if you did aspirin do not take a chance on taking tylenol. Unless someone has dared you to do it. ,nuff said?
you got something that is a mixture of codeine and tylenol. What I would do is find out about this procedeure where you use a paper coffee filter and water to seperate the codeine from the tylenol. Do this and you can take the codeine and the aspirin, the tylenol won t be there.
I do hope yahoo doesn t censor this well what you do is

You wouldn't take Sudafed for a sore throat. Your throat is probably sore because they put a tube down your throat so you could breath during surgery. I'd call the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist, what you could take that would be o..k.

Sudafed isn't indicated for a sore throat. Call your pharmacist
for an effective medication.

I would call my doctor to make sure. The tylenol can make you sleepy and dizzy. Sudafed can make you dizzy also.
The antibiotic will help with the sore throat.
Good Luck with your recovery!

I would not take any other drugs with tylenol 3 without first asking your pharmacist first. They are the best at drug interactions and personally I would not chance a bad drug reaction without first consulting a pharmacist.

You should call your pharmacist first and tell them everything you are taking, and which over the counter medsyou want to use. They will know better than anyone what the drug interactions are.
