I realize we need a lot of water, and should drink several onces a day. I buy bottle water, and add powders to them, such as ice tea, and lemonade. My question is...Is it better to drink straight water, or does it matter as long as I'm getting in plenty of water?
Forgive my ignorance. Thanks for your answers in advance.

Iraq51...thanks for your answer, but I don't spend money on bottle water to look cool. I do not like the taste of tap water, I can barely tolerate the taste of bottled water, which is why I add powders.

Hey Speedy,
Your question is not out of ignorance...blame society and advertisers...
I hated water so much so that for years I only drank coffee or Mountain Dew. Literally...
But my doctor and a good friend said I needed to change that...we are supposed to consume a lot of water per day...like 66% of your body weight in ounces...
(before you panic....like I did...Let me explain...LMAO)
I weigh 220lbs so I'm supposed to consume 145.2 ounces of water...that is about 7 20oz bottles per day or 6 24oz bottles.
Now, I do drink water...tap (filtered) on ice when I do not have Dasani available...Cold is the only way I can get it down. My doctor told me that adding things to water is something else the kidneys need to filter...they need plain ol' water to do their thing and your body needs it to do it's thing....
One added benefit....it makes your body think times are good and helps release the fat stores...say hello to the new summer you!!! Makes me look good in my kilt too! LAMO!!!!!!

Speedy, I agree with the whole bad tasting tap water issue. My tap water is nasty and I buy bottled water. I never add powders, as there are nasties in those powders. First, most powders are packed with sugar and have no nutritional value. Second, if those powders don't contain a mountain of sugar, such as Crystal Lite, they contain saccharin or aspartame to imitate sweetness. Aspartame turns to formaldehyde at 98.6 degrees F. Now, we need to drink water for health reasons, but not at the sake of pickling ourselves! Solution to your problem.....add a nice fresh piece of lime, lemon or even an orange. Gives a nice flavor that provides some Vitamin C, which our bodies need too. If citrus isn't your game, try your favorite fruit. I've used peaches, watermelon, cantaloupe and even grapes. If you like ice tea, which I drink a ton of, it will hydrate you but your liver and kidneys take the beating as they have to work to filter out the tea so your body can use the water. Hope that helps you out!

Your not ignorant...just in search of advice. My opinion is (depending on what country you may be in at the time) is to for go the bottled water. On average a gallon of bottled water (because you usually have to buy it in pint size or smaller bottles) costs more that a gallon of gasoline. Why spend that $$$ why tap water in most places is just as safe and meets your need for H2O in take. Practically the only place I used bottled water was in Iraq & Kuwait...that is all tht was considered safe to use while there.
If I am drive someplace and want water, then yes I buy a small bottle of water. As forpowders and such I don't add them in the US. I did add Gatoraide to my bottlredwater in Iraq...but that was to replenish the electrolyetes...it geta a little warm when the temperature in Baghdad reached 136 degrees Fahrenheit and 145 degrees Fahrenheit!
But I see on problem with adding a supplement to you water. But if consuming water for health reasons is your objective again; I would go with tap water and nor supplements. Ans you can always buy a couple of bottles of water and then refill them with tap water...inexpensive and you can still appear to be a "cool comsumer" of fashionable & expensive water!

You are not ignorant, it's a good question!
The answer is "it depends"!
Many of those "powders" are mostly sugar, so that is something to watch out for. While 8 glasses of water a day will hydrate you and improve your general health, you should make sure you aren't consuming an extra 8 ounces of sugar as a consequence!
Read the labels...carefully!

its good that u realise the importance of water as most of the people are not even aware how impotant water is,,,,now for ur question...ur answer is that at times it is good to take drinks like ice tea and stuff...but be careful as these powders if consumed too much cause a lot of harm....firstly they have a lot of fat, secondly they are not natural and contain lot of preservatives and other chemicals....and thirdly they kind of reduce the basic function of water....as in water is necessary to maintain our body's cool and it also neccesary as it helps in normal functioning of all our body systems especially the urinary system...and if u mix powder in water then this process or function may be inhibited....so prefreably take just water and at times u can take powders for a change....

Once in a while, do drink plain water only. But I don't think its very harmful adding the powders.

Adding powder, or salts, to water can increase your body uptake of these fluids. That's why we have isotonic drinks.
But if you take too much, then there might be a chance of increased blood pressure..
