No security Risk.....surprised yes.........quite an irony the ice in the himalayas is due to its height but at the poles it due to its location...if the ice melted at the himalayas....the ice at the poles must have already melted too...and by then we must have ceased to exist...in other words dont bother for the ice at the himalayas....

Melting Himalayas pose a high risk that is the result of Nature's fury against humans' disconcern towards Nature and Life. Melting Himalayas would gradually flash-flood the whole Northern India that would have a shocking effect on Ecology. When Fresh Water from Melting Himalayas would mix in the sea water , the salt content would be lowered and eventually a low pressure will be created that would force the air from high pressure to come fast into the low pressure region . This would result in wind storms , Cyclones , Tycoons ,Flash - Flooding , Hailstorming ,etc. and gradually earth would enter another ICE-AGE.
So, Lets Effort To Save Earth......

Melting Himalayas will not only pose security threat to the region but its an indication of threat to survival of mankind on this planet. Its just a part of a bigger ecological problem we'll face in near future.
* Melting of Himalaya may or may not result in flood but they do raise sea level, our ports and nearby cities will get drowned in sea. Water level in sea is increasing slowly.
* Our major rivers will not carry enough water for irrigation.
* Hydro electric projects which are coming up or already exist will become useless.
* Seasons will also get effected, they've already shifted and will continue to do so.
* Herbs, fruits and vegetable will suffer.
I don't think we can predict all the things if we mess with nature, so its better to realise our mistake as a society and take its responsibility.

The melting of himalayas would surely cause flood in northern India
Moreover as the Himalayas prevent India to become a cold desert... I think melting of Himalayas can cause a high security risk!!!

According to me,Himalayas act as a physical barrier between
India and neighbouring countries.
Also Himalayas protect us from cold waves from north.
Himalayas are the source of life in India because they give rise to rivers like Ganges.
Melting of Himalayas would be disastrous leading to floods in the beginning but later on,India may become a desert.
Its high time n we should do something for Global Warming.
First of all, more and more trees should be planted.
Secondly, people should switch on for other sources of energy rather than petroleum products.
I have observed that air conditioners add a lot of heat to the environment. They make inside cooler but in turn add heat to the environment.
So the air conditioner companies should look seriously and redesign their works for the good.

well, every one seems to be pointing out rather clearly what the climatic, ecological and bio diversity consequences of the "Melting Himaliyas" would be. Now to answer the question at hand, the security threat. It might not be extremely magnitudanal at this time and era, considering that times have changed from the med evial ages, when they acted like the greatest wall ever protecting nothern invasions from China. But , taking into consideration the technology available now, we have more to fend them off than just the emighty structure. However, since the height of the mountains would considerably reduce due the the snow covered peaks melting away, probably traversing them would become easier. Also, it would be far less climatically inhospitable to climb. We would in all probablity have to increase our BSF man power resoucres and deploy them along that border of the country, which presently is reletively less guarded. It would in all probability lead to illegal immigrations and insurgency intances would be on a rise.

melting of Himalayas will cause the snow to melt and initially cause flooding of rivers in the northern region.
since it is a source of water for the Ganges it will lead to drying of the river in the future.
loss of vegetation in the lower Himalayas will lead to soil erosion , global warming, less rain fall.
Himalayans ranges form the boundary in the north and protect the country from the cold winds blowing from the Gobi desert and also from other neighbouring countries.which can pose a security threat,

The melting himalayas will get more water with them with huge force thru mountains and will uproot the trees and eroise the land base threatening the population on the banks of the rivers. The water level at the plains will be much higher and it can lead to flash floods and can cause harm to the standing crop fo harvesting. due to fast melting glaciers the ice level in the mountains will be reduced and the day will not be far when the rivers like ganga will be extinct from the universe.the weather cycle shall totally change with this phenomen.this is all happening due to the global warming.we have to stop deforestation, keep our surroundings free form the lethal gases and we have to search for other sources than organic like solar energy and atomic energy so that our ecological balance is retained in the world.

being the crown of the sub continent, Himalayas have been protecting India from the Siberian winds. but if melted, climatic changes are inevitable. also the danger of sliding the glaciers pose to have a threat to the locals and most importantly the army men posted there would be in a difficult situation as it would be difficult to keep the Chinese and other neighbouring enemies away.

Himalayas being the only prominent ice covered peak row in South Asia supplies the major bulk of water required for different purposes in India. I f the Himalayas melt faster it could accelerate the depletion of water resources in northern India. Also floods could become common and it could also lead to the destruction of the Sunderbans, one of the hot spots of bio diversity in the world.
