It probably is a compliment, but on its own it may be a left-handed one.
It's a more sincere compliment if he blurts out that you are astoundingly hot, and then in a red faced attempt to put it into context, and to suggest that he isn't completely superficial, he lists sweet among all the other things you also are.

Find out if there is any sweet thing you did or gave him for saying so if not question him to find out why he said so. If he takes time to answer you he was not saying it from the heart but if he answers you quick then he meant it and take whatever answer he gives you as genuine. Men sometimes find words to say just to while time in case you did not know.

It's a kinda protective comment, my bloke uses it and most of the time I love, occasionally thought it bugs me because I'm just dying for him to say gorgeous and he'll say sweet.

Sounds like something you call someone u just want to be friends with. Guess it depends how he said it. If he looked all romantic then maybe he likes you too but if he said it sort of off the cuff then i would say he just wants to be your mate.

Yes but he has the same feelings for you as he would for his sister!! Last nite I watched "Bones" and she was looking stunning in her evening wear. David Boreanaz's character, Booth said she looked "nice".
