To answer that question, we should talk about what all religions do NOT have in common.

Not all religions have the concept of "going to heaven".
Not all religions believe in divine gods or God.
Not all religions assume that human can be happy.

But all try to answer one basic question.
"What is the meaning of existence?"
Some religion say that there's no meaning in life, and the best way live it is to let go of all desires. But then to define and observe life that has no meaning in turn associates meaning in life. Some religion say upfront it is to please God and do his will (even if it harms others). Some religion stresses relationship with a personal God that has a plan for individual and also the humanity.

But all religions try to find the meaning of very human existence through some means.

Hindus worship statues, but they believe that there is 'one' God who had distributed his qualities in gods.
Christians believe Jesus the son of God, so they believe that there is a God who is most Superior.
