I had a horrible dream lastnight that my boyfriend had left me for someone else, I woke up checking that he was still lying beside me, it completely unnnerved me. Has anyone ever experienced the same sort of feeling and waking up startled to make sure it isnt real?

It's natural to have those type of dreams/feelings. It might have a basis on something that happened recently. (If you had an argument and said something that you didn't mean. Did something you thought might be wrong or "not right" if the other found out.)
On the other hand, sometimes a dream is just a dream. You might wake up from it and it seems so real you just need to double check. (That usually happens to me after I eat too much spicy Indian food the night before.)

Dreams are often very real. They also tell us things and reflect on the life we are living day to day. Try to figure out why you drempt what you did. Do you have any real reason to wonder if he's straying or are you insecure about the relationship? Visit with yourself about it first and then if you're comfortable enough, share it with him. He may be able to put your mind at ease.

You probably have a subconscience fear that he will eventually leave you. You need to have him reassure you of his feelings.
