Cats... when's the last time you saw a cat pulling a sled?

Its hard to tell who is more intelligent, but cats are definitely a lot more independent. Some cats will stay at home all day lying around in the sun, while others will spend all their time outside and only come in for mealtimes. The difference between a cat and a dog is that I get the feeling that a dog needs his owner and craves attention. A cat, if it comes to sit on your lap isn't craving attention, its giving you some attention. I have also found that cats feel a person's emotions alot stronger than a dog does. When I am upset, when I fight with my mother or when I am crying, my one cat will always come and sit on my lap and purr to stop me shouting or stop me being upset, or else it will sit at my feet staring up at me, meowing as if asking me to stop. Cats have a lot of personality just like dogs do, but they are harder to control than dogs are. You get to know your cats personality, especially if you have it from a kitten and you grow up with it and get used to it and then you will have your perfect friend. A dog may be a mans best friend, but the cat is the one who comforts you when you are really down.

Also, those who say that dogs are more intelligent because they can do tricks are wrong. Dogs learn the tricks because they get rewarded and when they stop getting rewarded, then they will still do the tricks. I don't call that intelligence. A cat on the other hand can probably learn to do the same tricks that a dog can, but just refuses on principle.

Cats are probably the most intelligent, but it is hard to fully determine feline intelligence by any kind of testing because to get accurate test results, the cat has to WANT to cooperate with the tester. Cats are much harder to fool than dogs. It's easy to give a dog a pill it doesn't want, by putting the pill inside a tasty treat. A cat usually will eat the treat and leave the pill behind when you try this trick on a cat! Cats also can be taught to use the human toilet (and some can be taught to flush it too, although once they learn to flush, they are apt to flush the toilet just for the fun of watching the water swirling) Cats are much harder to trick than dogs are. For instance, when you are looking for a cat or dog that doesn't want to be found, the dog can be easily fooled into revealing itself. A cat will sit motionless, unseen, and silent, and watch you and refuse to reveal its presence, as you stand just inches from the cat, as you call its name, try food bait, etc. I've had both cats and dogs for many years, and I've seen cats do so many things that the dogs never thought of trying (which probably is a good thing, because some of those things are things I didnt need any animal knowing how to do). A few of these things include turning on water faucets, opening kitchen cabinet doors, opening the refrigerator door, knowing which surge protector shuts down all the pcs and knowing how to hit the switch to shut off the surge protector, knowing how to open a dresser drawer where I keep my ponytail holders (the cats love those fabric covered elastic ring kind of ponytail holders and they steal them out of the drawer to play with). I could mention more, but this post is getting long enough, I think!

In my experience and an owner of both a dog and a cat for severial years now i would personally say a cat was the most intelligent...the reason i say this it does'nt matter what type of cat (breed) there just generally smart bright and cocky with it , but dogs generally this will depend on the breed and there owners....what i will say is there is no straight forward compitition when it comes to affection as both my dog and cat are very loving and affectinate towards me and my son...

I think they are both intelligent in their own right.

I am only going to discuss cats because a lot of people think you cannot train a cat to sit when given the command, but you can. Also, someone said that a cat cannot fetch, well I have seen several who can. One of my friends along with her cat, became a roommate of mine for a short time and Scarlett loved to play fetch, for hours!!! I think cats are distracted or bothered by a lot more interference than dogs, though, so it is much harder to get and keep their attention, plus they would not do it to please us. They will only do these things if they really like to (Scarlett playing fetch, for instance) or are motivated by getting a treat or some food. I have had several cats in my lifetime and can tell you that they are wonderful watch dogs. My friend's cat was, also. They are sometimes very subtle about it, but if you know your cat, you will pick up on their keen hearing. My friends cat knew when her owner would be coming home and I could see the excitement build before she got to the house. On occasion, she would meow right before she got there. When she turned the corner in her car, the cat was ecstatic. As soon as she walked in the door, Scarlett calmed down.

One of my favorite cats, Marshmallow, was very watchful of the house and when someone approached the front sidewalk to the front door, I knew it before they got there. She had a way of letting me know by her change in disposition. I like this about cats, because if there is someone lurking around your house, a cat can let you know in a very quiet way. This is a good thing because you will know they are out there and they will not know you know. I don't know if people actually realize how sensitive cats are in this way. I consider them better watch dogs than dogs. Just my 2 cents.

That is a hard question to answer as cat owners will choose cats and dog owners will choose dogs. They are both very intelligent if they receive great training they are wonderful pets to have and love for years to come .

Best wishes on becaming a pet parent to a new little kitten.
Hope you have a great name for Him or Her!

It's like comparing apples to oranges. But I will argue till I die that cats certainly aren't LESS intelligent than dogs. THey just have different personalities, and don't care to do silly tricks just to please you.

Despite what some people say, though, cats make perfectly warm, loyal, sweet, affectonate companions. The other day I was sick in bed and my little sweetie was determined to stay curled up right smack next to me all morning. It was so sweet LOL.

Besides, all the stupid talk about dogs doing tricks. Have you ever watched a movie with a cat in it? That cat is trained, just like a dog! It can definitely be done, you just have to convince the cat that there's something in it for them besides YOUR happiness.

Each are intelligent in their own right I think. Though I have never been a dog owner so maybe I am biased in favour of cats :) Cats are definitely intelligent and very loving too :)

Dogs are loyally intelligent.
Cats are sadistically intelligent.
One time...I had a bowl of tuna spread and the phone rang...so I put the bowl on top of the refrigerator.
While I was gone...my cat told the roaches under the stove that I left tuna spread on top of the icebox.
When I came back, I dropped the bowl of tuna spread on the floor and when I went to get a broom, the cat ran over to the tuna spread saying how he kind of likes roaches in tuna spread and he ate it.
How do I know the cat did it?
My dog is loyal and he ratted the cat out.

I feel cats are more intelligent cause of their characteristics and nature. Dogs are just happy go-lucky animals. I remember when I got into a really bad argument with my housemate, my cat completely stop going into her room, when before the argument she liked to go in there every so often and even ocassionally napped there when I wasn't home. Hopefully, my old crazy housemate didn't do something to my baby to make her stop going in the room, I sort of doubt it cause she liked my cat a lot too. But yea, I must say my cat is pretty good at sensing my emotional state and it just amazes me. =)
