The counter top I'm speaking of is formica that we will eventually replace, but I would like to give it a makeover untill then. Don't want to do something that's not going to work well.

Depends on the material you are covering. I built concrete countertops and was not happy with any finish I tried until I went on-line, found a clear epoxy finish which I applied. I am finding it to be extremely durable. When it was applied it was as shiny as a freshly polished mirror. We buffed it with steel wool the morning after application, before it was fully cured to tone down the shine. It is virtually unchanged since, no scratches or wear. Working with epoxy requires a bit more skill than ordinary paint or varnishes.

There's a product called Paper Illusions Wallpaper which can be used. I've seen it used to cover flooring and spoken with people who have used it to cover counter tops as well. As long as you put several coats of polyurethane over it after applying it, allowing it to dry between each coat, then lightly sand the surface and apply 1-2 more coats, it will look AMAZING...and it is very durable. The other thing is you'll need to prep the counter first before applying the PaperIllusion with a wallpaper primer...there's instructions that come with the product. It's available in most Lowe's stores (in a handful of colors) or online in a whole bunch of colors. It's been featured on QVC before where you use it on your walls, but I know for a fact it works wonders on flooring and counter tops as well. Good luck!

Honey, I can just about guarantee you're not gonna get both. It will either be durable and look crappy, or it will look great and not hold up. :(

If you have a Lowe's or Home Depot or other hardware store near you, you might ask this question of them.

Good luck!
