Pretty soon. The acid from the stomach is really powerful (about the same as battery acid). I've spent a lot of time trying to restore the damaged dentitions of people with reflux acid erosion - it is not just bulimia, there are many medical conditions that can have this effect.

Dentists are not social judges but highly skilled professionals and I hope that the rather silly answer given by the first answerer will be met with the contempt it deserves. It's your life, I wont judge, but I will tell you if I perceive a problem that has a dental or general health implication - then it's up to you whether you want me to help or not. That's the best deal I can come up with.

You need to speak to someone - is you GP sympathetic?

My little boy is only 2 so we're a little bit off from the tooth fairy routine, but my husband and I decided that it will be $1.00 per tooth and some little prize with it that will vary each time he loses a tooth. Dollar stores are great for things like this because you can find some fun things without spending a fortune. IMHO $5 a tooth is ridiculous. It's a tooth for goodness sake. Save the big treats and toys for special things that happen once a year like Christmas or a birthday.

I think someone said it would show up within a few months. I'd agree with that. A dentist or hygienist can spot signs from across the room (not literally of course). Don't bother trying to cover it up, but you can ask that they be discreet and talk to you about it.

FYI, not that you smoke, but everyone who does always tries to tell the dentist they don't. Your dentist doesn't care that much, but its really apparent to him/her, so don't bother lying about it.

The acid from your stomach would corrode your teeth very fast. If you're doing this I think that what the dentist thinks is the least of you're problems and you should eat healthier if you want to be thin.

Please go to the doctor about this problem and get help NOW! The dentist can't do any more than advise you that you are damaging your teeth as well as your body organs. This is an illness like any other than needs medical help.

You'll notice before they do.

The stomach acid removes the protective enamel from your teeth and they literally rot away. You'll be in quite a bit of pain, require remaining teeth be pulled, and wont be able to eat anything. Eventually you'll need dentures.

Maybe it's just me, but *counseling* sounds like a much better and more comfortable alternative. Please get treated.

ANY DENTIST WHO HAS KNOWN ABOUT BULIMIA WILL KNOW YOU PURGE W/O EVEN GIVING YOU A DENTAL EXAM, JUST BY SEEING YOU SMILE. THE FRONT TEETH BECOME VERY THIN AND TRANSLUCENT TO LIGHT. THIS CAN'T BE HIDDEN.
IF YOU ARE DOING THIS IT'S TIME TO GET HELP FROM A QUALIFIED PSYCHOLOGIST.

Not long. A few months, perhaps less. If you are suffering from this, I beg you to get help. Life is about far more than how skinny you are.
