Im looking to buy a used honda civic and most of the ones I can afford have a salvage title. They were either because of theft or because they were in an accident. They are fixed now but is it a good idea to buy them anyway with a salvage title?

In most cases it's not very wise to buy a salvaged vehicle, however it's possible (if your careful) to find some that may be a good deal.

For example--If it was stolen and had appearance damage such as paint scratched, trim damages etc and not had any structural damaged to the body then it may be worth a look.

If it's a salvage vehicle because of a wreck and sustained major collision repairs then it would be best to look else where.

Salvaged vehicles will have less value of course and will be difficult to resell.

In all cases if it was salvaged due to flood then it's best to avoid. Even though it appears to be ok at the time, flood damages often occur later due to long term corrosion of wiring and expensive electronic parts.

Even worse, and one that most people don't think about is the health hazards associated with buying a car that's been involved with water damage.

Consider what flood waters contain, sewage, dead animal remains, harmful contaminants and with Katrina, Rita and other major floods, even human remains.

Flood waters are susceptible to cause Septic Shock, which caused the death of a Mississippi fire fighter after he scratched his finger extracting a Katrina flood victim.

Also some states require a separate inspection of salvaged vehicles before they can be legally driven. You should check with your states dept of public safety for details.

(If you still decide to buy a salvaged vehicle that's been wrecked and repaired be sure to have an independent body shop inspect the repairs that were done.)

Buying A Salvage Car

The answer is what is the value of the vehicle as is versus what they are asking. If you believe a flood damage car with a salvage title is worth $0, you are an idiot. So, none of you would by a 2013 Ferrari model car for $10,000. If you say no, you are brain dead. The salvage value of the car is worth 6 figures. Think before you post and give bad information to someone looking for good advice. If you are going to buy a salvage vehicle and know very little mechanically or about salvage vehicles, take someone with you to examine the car who does. You just might find a hell of a car to drive at a fraction of the cost or make some good money selling the parts not affected by the damage or recondition the ones that were and selling them.

Not really. The salvage title was issued for a reason -- the car was severly damaged and considered unrepairable. A theft never results in a salvage title unless the vehicle was severely damaged after it was stolen.

You need to know the exact reason that a salvage title was issued. If it's an older vehicle that had minor damage but was still considered totalled due to its low value it MIGHT be worth the risk. If it was flood damaged you should NEVER buy it regardless of what the seller says.

In most cases you should NEVER pay more than 25% - 50% of the wholesale blue book value for a salvage titled vehicle. You'll likely need the money you saved for future repairs and you will also get much less for the vehicle yourself when YOU sell it in a couple of years.

Just be careful when your buying a salvage title car. Hondas are not bad, they are pretty decent cars, and there are pretty decent sellers who aren't lying to you when they say they did fix the car. I bought a 2000 honda civic Si salvage title due to theft and it runs great, nothing major was wrong. Again just be careful when your buying cars that are slavage and double check everything.

It is okay to buy a car with a salvaged title as long as you don't plan on selling. To get the best out of a car with a salvaged title, you should drive it until it won't run anymore.
