Naomi instructed Ruth to uncover Boaz's feet. But to "uncover" was also a term which meant to expose or make naked. Ruth removed Boaz's covering over his feet. I had to rewrite this because I was tired and was not thinking. But, by lifting the covering off of his feet, it was a sign to Boaz that Ruth was interested in him. It was very uncustomary and inappropriate for a woman do to such a thing in that culture. The word "uncover" carries sometimes the act of something "shameful".

Ruth did this as Naomi asked her too! It was customary, in those days, for a kinsman to take in a widow..."brother's keeper." Well, Naomi was kin to Boaz and so, she sent Ruth to find favor with Boaz so he would consider being the kinsman. After all, Boaz did have an eye for Ruth and I think Naomi knew he was more than attracted to her widowed daughter-in-law. Boaz did indeed agree to take them in as kinsman; however, he and Ruth ended up married and provided Naomi with more children...God restored what Naomi lost through Ruth and Boaz. Awesome historical Book!

By the way, Naomi told Ruth to lay at his feet. Ruth obeyed, as she always had.

Ruth instructed by her mother in law lieth at Booz's feet, claiming him for her husband by the law of affinity: she receiveth a good answer, and six measures of barley.

I think lying at his feet meant she was under his control. I heard on some TV show (probably the History channel) that she told him he 'drank milk from her' (which meant had sex) so culturally, he was pressured to marry her.
