Do not buy any store bought pet food from the pet stores (Petsmart, Petco, grocery stores, etc.) The FDA has found out that there are still over 400 stores nationwide that HAVE NOT taken the recalled pet food off of the shelves. They are losing profit and apparently don't care that the food is poisoned. Just a couple of days ago China announced that all GRAIN PROTEINS (they go by various names: wheat gluten, rice gluten, rice protein, corn gluten, etc) are contaminated by melamine.

If you want to make raw food for your dog it's easier than you think and a lot cheaper. Just buy raw chicken wings, chicken liver, chicken hearts chop those up (make sure it's not too much, go by the weight of your dog, you can probably ask your vet about this) add a frozen veggie medley (carrots, broccoli, collard greens, apples, etc) mix together. Make sure nothing is cooked. Raw meat is excellent for dogs--going back to basics. Our dogs thrived on it--better coats, teeth got so much better from the raw meaty bones, that "dog" smell went away, eye sight improved--everything.

Our dogs love it and you know it's safe because you made it. You can also make weekly batches and put it in your freezer--keeps VERY well.

There is substantial evidence that raw food can alleviate allergies as well (most animal allergies are caused by the addition of chemicals, wheat and other food stuffs that dogs never eat in the wild anyway.)

Read the links and good luck!

My pet food recipe:
2 cups Brown rice
1 cups oats
1 cup corn meal
1 cup Grape nuts
1 egg
ground turkey
peas and carrots

Buy in bulk.
Cook brown rice 2 cups at a time in a big pot. After rice is cooked,
mix with oats, corn meal, and grape nuts. Store in a large glass container in the fridge.
Give your dog a serving size that you would normally vs dry food-this food is hydrated so maybe a bit more.
Buy ground turkey in bulk-Bag (seperately bag) as much as you would give from a can-8oz and store in freezer-take out daily and microwave for each meal adding some peas carrots and egg.
I have had this diet since the food scare. My dogs are doing fantastic. Their coats are nice and soft and they seem less hyper.
All you need is some big pots and a large glass bowl, a little more time, and wallah-your own dog food.
It is best to give for a week, and see how they are doing.

Check out a good quality natural dogfood..

Avoid Beneful, Pedigree, Ol Roy, Kibbles N Bits, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet.. Etc.. VERY Crappy dog foods, no nutritional value at all.. It's actually cheaper to feed a good quality food. As they eat less overall, and they also poop alot less.

Also check things against the recall list and avoid foods now with wheat gluten and rice protein in them.

what kind of allergies? You can get a list of all the recalled food on any news website. I would go with pedigree! thats all I let my dog have even before this whole scare. They are a very good brand, trustworthy and I have never heard anything bad about it unlike other well known ones like Iams, Not sure but i don't think that raw meat is good for dogs, thats more of a cat thing. hope this helped

For the time being, I would restrain from all wet food for dogs. I feed my dogs only dry food. And have done that for years. There teeth are in great shape. I feel it's also healthier. Once in a while, I have a whole chicken cooked. I take some chicken meat, and rice left overs, and put veggies in. Its a special treat and they are so thankful for that.

Just make sure it doesn't have Wheat Gluten as an ingredient and you will be fine. Everything that has been recalled has the wheat gluten and they have found thats the cause of the contaminated food. I feed my dogs Purina Healthy Weight.

anything availible at the pet store is ok, they have identified the problem and narrowed it down the the wheat gluten in the food products. I would recomend getting your food from a larger store or find food without the wheat gluten or foods that are not made by the master foods corporation
