There are physical exfoliators and chemical exfoliators
Chemical exfoliators include products like Chemical Peels, anything that has alpha or beta hydroxy acids or glycolic acids.
Physical exfoliators include products like Microderm Abrasion, sugar, salt, sand, or other coarse ingredients.
Chemical exfoliators disolve the glue that holds the dead skin cells together and allows them to be sloughed off.
Physical exfoliators physically sweep a layer or more off the most top layer of skin.
The products I currently use are Regeneration Platinum skin renewing serum (alpha hydroxy acid), Skinlogics skin scrub (polishing beads), Chemical Peel, and Microderm Abrasion (voted best at-home treatment by Oprah)....all from BeautiControl. That is in addition to my skin care regimen.
My skin is soft! All of the above treatments are not irritating and work great!

The best one I have found for the money is sold at walmart for $35.00. It is a hand held, battery run microdermabrasion kit by Nuetrogena. It does wonders for the skin. It comes with the unit and the micro scrub. Just follow the instructions and do not push too hard. If you push too hard you will be red and swollen. It can be used anywhere on the body except for close to the eyes. It has helped me rub out some fine lines and has given me a much improved healthy glow. *Neutrogena Advanced Solutions at home Microdermabrasion system*

The best exfoliating products that I have seen are Beauty 4 Ashes Gentle Acne Face Scrub and Gentle Body Acne Scrub. I think that they use to make a scrub for stretch marks and cellulite too. Their stuff works really good. It stops acne. Smoothes your skin and smells great. It contains tons of essential oils, honey, and aloe. The makers claim that there stuff works overnight; and I have to say, it really does. It exfoliates and cleans your skin brilliantly. This product is also packed with lots of skin healing ingredients, In the two months that used it, my acne and scars literally disappeared. You can find it online at www.discoverb4a.com.

The best exfoliater I have ever used is all-natural. Mix sea salt in with olive oil and scrub gently. You'll glow! Don't use it on your face though, bit too harsh. Good for knees, elbows and feet.

I like using a mixture of ground raw almonds, or oatmeal, with honey. It makes a gentle moisturising exfoliant, with a gentle tightening action. Apply with moistened fingers. Leave it on your face for a few minutes for tightening and moisturising. Rinse with splashes of warm, not hot water. Finish up with a cool splash.
This works great for the face, and makes a great scrub for dead skin cells.
The sea salt and olive oil mixture mentioned by another reader is excellent for the rest of your body, including hands and feet.
I hope this advice is what you're looking for.
