well either the security settings won't allow Microsoft to do this or there are so many updates needed it just takes alot of time .. also if your friend is using a copied or pirated version of windows it could cause that ..
Tell your friend to try again and then just leave the computer for about an hour .. don't do anything else on it just let Microsoft do its thing ....if your friend has a virus program on it have them do a scan first to see if there are any virus on it then disable it while doing the update ..if they have a pop up blocker that will do it too ...

i recommend downloading them once they seem. they're updates which will strengthen the device and make it extra accessible that you need to apply. maximum updates you are able to examine intimately about if you're hesitant yet there are genuinely no downsides to updating your software except it comes with a function of your own distaste. desire this facilitates and clears your confusion:)

Check the Event Viewer in the Administrative Tools, located in the Control Panel.
If you find an error message post it at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ , and we will try to help.
This type of forum does not lend it's self well to interaction. This is more of a 1 question, 1 response.

What version of Windows?
Windows98 does not have any support. It is outdated.
Is a firewall stopping it?
Is your memory (RAM) overloaded?
Try again. This time, close all open programs (including wallpaper and screensaver) except antivirus. When asked to run or save, choose save.
When you come to the save as window, save to the desktop. If it downloads, execute it from the desktop.
